'''Mongoose''' is the vigilante identity of '''Richard Fisk''', a former government-trained assassin with superhuman reflexes and near-impossible speed of reaction. A member of the modern [[Crucible:The Furies|Furies]], Mongoose combines lethal martial skill with an instinctive refusal to become the weapon he was created to be.

== Background ==

Richard Fisk was recruited at a young age into a covert United States training program designed to produce elite assassins and infiltration operatives. Isolated, conditioned, and relentlessly trained, Fisk was taught to move unseen, react instantly, and eliminate targets without hesitation.

Among his instructors was a decorated war hero who became both mentor and father figure to him.

Then came the order.

One night, Fisk was assigned a mission to assassinate the very man who had trained him. Richard refused. Before he could act further, his mentor was murdered anyway, eliminated by the same system they had both served.

That betrayal shattered whatever loyalty Fisk still possessed.

He disappeared into the shadows, turning his skills against the corruption and hidden machinery that had created him in the first place.

== The Furies ==

Mongoose eventually came to the attention of [[Crucible:Dark Angel|Dark Angel]], who was assembling a new incarnation of [[Crucible:The Furies|the Furies]]. Recognizing both his effectiveness and his anger, she recruited him into the team.

Within the Furies, Mongoose became known as a precision operative: fast, disciplined, and terrifyingly efficient in close combat.

He prefers silence to speeches.

Within covert circles, Mongoose has a reputation as a ghost who turned on his creators and survived. Among heroes, he is respected but difficult to fully trust, partly because he operates with the instincts of an assassin even when fighting for the right side.

== Legacy ==

Mongoose represents the failure of institutions to fully own the people they shape. He was engineered to become the perfect operative, but retained enough humanity to reject the purpose assigned to him.

The system created a weapon.

What emerged was a man with his own target list.
