Unfortunately, he lacked discipline outside the ring.

By middle age, McGiffey had become a washed-up boxer buried beneath gambling debts, bad loans, and criminal associations. Too stubborn to quit and too damaged physically to compete properly anymore, he drifted deeper into underworld circles looking for quick money.

Then came the accident.

== The Accident ==

Accounts differ regarding the exact circumstances, but all agree the accident was horrific.

McGiffey suffered catastrophic injuries that left one arm mangled beyond saving and much of his body permanently damaged. Unable to fight, work, or repay his debts, Tug found himself cornered by criminals eager to collect what he owed.

Instead of killing him, however, the underworld saw an opportunity.

Secret experimental technology was used to graft a massive mechanical piston apparatus onto the stump of Tug’s ruined arm, transforming him into something halfway between gangster, cyborg, and industrial demolition tool.

== Crime Spree ==

Armed with his terrifying mechanical weapon, Piledriver embarked upon a violent one-man crime spree across the city. Banks, armored cars, warehouses, and rival gang operations all fell victim to the brute force of his piston-driven strikes.

Unlike many criminal masterminds, Piledriver relied almost entirely on direct violence and intimidation.

And for a while, that was enough.

The sheer destructive power of his mechanical arm made him extraordinarily difficult for ordinary police to stop. Walls collapsed beneath his blows. Vehicles crumpled. Steel doors burst inward under piston-driven impacts.

Eventually his rampage attracted the attention of [[Crucible:Power Man|Power Man]].

== Battle With Power Man ==

Piledriver’s criminal career culminated in a dramatic confrontation with [[Crucible:Power Man|Power Man]], whose own immense physical strength finally proved capable of matching the mechanical force of Tug’s piston arm.

The battle became legendary for its sheer physical destruction, with streets torn apart and buildings damaged during the clash.

Ultimately, Power Man defeated McGiffey not simply through strength but by recognizing the desperation and self-destruction driving him.

For perhaps the first time in years, someone treated Tug as a man instead of a weapon.

== The Plunderers ==

During portions of his criminal career, Piledriver also operated alongside [[Crucible:The Plunderers|the Plunderers]], fitting naturally among their collection of roughneck thieves, raiders, and smash-and-grab specialists.

Even among criminals, however, Tug remained more laborer than mastermind.

== Technology ==

Piledriver’s signature weapon was the steam-driven piston apparatus attached permanently to his arm.

The device granted:
