CCHeader <div class="codex-page codex-page--crucible-comics cc-page--location"> = Praxis = Praxis is a rogue planetoid on the edge of the Karnak Empire, locked in a long elliptical orbit around a massive black hole known as the Eye of the Demon. Bathed in the black hole’s distorted radiation and eerie gravitational lensing, Praxis is one of the strangest and most infamous arenas in known space: an enormous cosmic coliseum where gladiators, champions, monsters, criminals, mercenaries, and heroes are brought to fight before the watching eyes of the interstellar elite. Praxis is not a world in the ordinary sense. It is an arena, a city, a prison, a casino, a shrine to violence, and a business enterprise built on spectacle. Across the galaxy, its name is spoken with fear, excitement, disgust, and hunger. == The Eye Of The Demon == The Eye of the Demon is a vast black hole near the disputed frontier of Karnak influence. To ordinary navigation systems, it is a gravitational hazard. To smugglers, gamblers, slavers, nobles, warlords, and thrill-seekers, it is the lighthouse by which Praxis is found. The black hole dominates the sky of the planetoid. Its accretion fires twist space into burning arcs. Stars behind it are bent into rings and broken halos. The light over Praxis is never stable. It flickers, shifts, and bends, casting the surface in spectral colors that seem to belong to no ordinary sun. For the fighters brought to Praxis, the Eye is an inescapable reminder of death. Every duel, every contest, every roar from the crowd takes place beneath the gaze of a cosmic abyss. The message is clear: glory is brief, and the dark waits for everyone. == The Rogue Planetoid == Praxis itself is a captured rogue planetoid, ancient, scarred, and heavily modified. Its original surface is buried under alien architecture, defense systems, artificial habitats, landing spires, spectator vaults, service tunnels, prison levels, and the vast central arena complex that gives the world its reputation. The planetoid’s atmosphere has been artificially enriched with exotic gases, allowing a wide range of alien species to survive without full environmental suits. It is not comfortable for everyone, but it is breathable or tolerable to enough species that Praxis can host fighters and spectators from across the galaxy. For those with more specialized needs, the facility maintains sealed habitats, pressure chambers, aquatic tanks, methane lounges, high-gravity cells, and luxury atmospheric suites. Gravity across Praxis is carefully controlled. Some districts maintain near-standard gravity. Others are tuned for alien physiology. The arenas themselves may alter gravity from one battle to the next, giving the planetoid its reputation for impossible combat. == The Great Coliseum == At the heart of Praxis lies the Great Coliseum, a structure so large that first-time visitors often mistake it for a city or crater. It is both arena and machine, a world-scale theater of controlled violence capable of generating entire battle environments within its containment fields. The coliseum does not present a single fighting ground. Instead, advanced systems shape surreal battle zones according to the demands of spectacle, wager, punishment, or ritual challenge. Fighters may be thrown into crystal forests where every branch can cut through armor, molten plains broken by floating basalt islands, zero-gravity voids filled with drifting wreckage, artificial jungles, frozen labyrinths, storm towers, collapsing cities, mirrored deserts, or oceans contained inside transparent gravitic shells. Some arenas are designed for formal duels. Others are built for team battles, monster hunts, endurance trials, executions, or contests where the environment is as deadly as the opponent. The best warriors do not merely defeat enemies on Praxis. They learn to survive the stage itself. == The Ssassanids == Praxis is overseen by the enigmatic beings known as the Ssassanids. Little is known of their origins, and they seem to prefer it that way. They are neither fully merchants, priests, aristocrats, nor criminals, though they perform aspects of all these roles. They control the arenas, maintain the containment fields, manage the fighters, protect the betting houses, negotiate with patrons, and enforce the laws of Praxis with cold efficiency. The Ssassanids present themselves as custodians of an ancient tradition. They claim that the arenas of Praxis are not mere blood sport, but a proving ground where courage, strength, cunning, and destiny are revealed beneath the Eye of the Demon. Their critics describe this as elegant nonsense used to justify slavery, murder, and gambling. Whatever the truth, the Ssassanids are powerful. They possess advanced technology, private forces, political contacts, and enough leverage over interstellar elites to keep Praxis operating despite periodic condemnations. More than one empire has denounced the planetoid in public while its nobles placed wagers there in private. == Gladiators Of The Edge == The fighters of Praxis come from every corner of known space. Some are professional gladiators who seek wealth and renown. Some are condemned criminals fighting for reduced sentences or the bare hope of freedom. Some are prisoners sold into the arenas. Some are warriors seeking honor. Some are monsters captured for spectacle. A few are heroes dragged there by treachery, challenge, or cosmic misfortune. A fighter who survives on Praxis can become famous across a hundred worlds. Victory brings credits, patrons, titles, weapons, contracts, and the adoration of audiences who may not know or care whether the champion ever wished to fight. Defeat may mean death, enslavement, dismemberment, humiliation, or being fed into the next spectacle as part of the scenery. The best gladiators become legends. Their names are chanted in orbital casinos, painted on fighter shrines, engraved on betting tokens, and whispered by new arrivals who hope not to face them. == Wagers And Spectacle == Praxis thrives on wagers placed by intergalactic elites. Karnak nobles, S'Taa magnates, pirate princes, corporate syndicates, alien aristocrats, criminal financiers, and wealthy thrill-seekers follow the games obsessively. Fortunes are won and lost on single blows, endurance rounds, survival odds, team betrayals, monster releases, and environmental shifts. The gambling is not limited to who wins. Spectators bet on method of victory, injury, survival time, weapon choice, number of opponents defeated, atmospheric failure, betrayal, mercy, and whether a fighter will look up at the Eye of the Demon before dying. The Ssassanids understand spectacle better than most civilizations understand politics. Every fight has a narrative. Every champion has a brand. Every rivalry is sharpened. Every comeback is monetized. Every death is edited into legend before the body cools. == Law And Neutrality == Praxis survives by maintaining a harsh and transactional neutrality. Officially, no empire rules there. Unofficially, too many powerful people benefit from its existence for any single power to shut it down easily. The Karnak Empire has influence near Praxis, but the planetoid lies just far enough beyond clean jurisdiction to remain useful, embarrassing, and deniable. The laws of Praxis are simple. Debts are honored. Contracts are enforced. Fighters belong to whoever holds their bond unless they win release. Patrons are protected so long as they pay. Cheating is permitted only when it improves the drama and has been authorized by the house. Unauthorized interference is punished spectacularly. Heroes who arrive on Praxis often find the moral landscape infuriating. Everything is legal because the people in charge have defined legality around profit, violence, and consent extracted under duress. == The Arenas As Technology == The arena systems of Praxis are among the most advanced environmental-control technologies in known space. Massive containment fields shape atmosphere, terrain, gravity, pressure, temperature, radiation, and hazard profiles in real time. Within one hour, the Great Coliseum can transform from a battlefield of frozen methane spires into a jungle of carnivorous plants, then into a shattered orbital platform hanging over an artificial abyss. The technology is precise enough to keep spectators safe while placing combatants in lethal danger. It can selectively permit weapons fire, redirect explosions, suspend molten rock, generate localized weather, simulate vacuum, or isolate individual fighters in shifting chambers of force. This technology is one reason Praxis is so coveted. Governments and corporations would pay dearly to understand the full arena system. The Ssassanids have killed many thieves who tried. == The Black Hole's Shadow == The Eye of the Demon is more than scenery. Its presence affects everything on Praxis. Timekeeping is complicated by relativistic distortions. Navigation requires constant correction. Radiation storms sometimes wash across the outer defenses. Gravitational stresses occasionally create tremors deep in the planetoid’s structure. Some mystics and alien philosophers claim the black hole also has a spiritual effect. They say combat beneath the Eye strips away illusion. They say warriors show their true selves there. They say the dead do not leave Praxis cleanly, but fall inward toward the darkness. Most professional gamblers consider this poetic foolishness. Most veteran gladiators do not. == Notable Visitors == Praxis has drawn champions, villains, mercenaries, bounty hunters, exiles, and unwilling heroes from across the galaxy. Its proximity to Karnak space has made it a recurring point of interest for imperial agents, border worlds, outlaws, and anyone seeking a neutral but dangerous meeting place. Superheroes who find themselves on Praxis are rarely there by accident. They may be captured, challenged, blackmailed, or drawn into rescuing someone who has been sold into the games. Once inside the system, escape is difficult. The planetoid’s defenses are designed to prevent both prison breaks and unpaid debts. == Reputation == Praxis is famous, infamous, and impossible to ignore. To warriors, it is the ultimate proving ground. To criminals, it is opportunity. To nobles, it is entertainment. To reformers, it is an obscenity. To the Ssassanids, it is business. To the gladiators trapped beneath its alien lights, it is the place where survival and glory become the same thing. Above it all hangs the Eye of the Demon, the black hole that gives Praxis its terrible majesty. Beneath that impossible sky, empires wager, crowds roar, champions bleed, and the darkness waits with infinite patience. </div> CCNav
