'''Ratso''' is the criminal identity of '''Sam Kowalski''', a disturbed former exterminator who descended gradually into madness while working for years in the sewer systems beneath [[Crucible:Pacific City|Pacific City]]. Convinced he can hear and understand the voices of rats, Kowalski abandoned extermination work entirely and reinvented himself as a bizarre urban vigilante-criminal devoted to protecting and empowering the city’s rodent population.

Armed with poisons, traps, and his signature entangling “trapper gun,” Ratso became a recurring low-level menace and eventually joined the grotesque villain collective known as [[Crucible:The Vermin|the Vermin]].

He insists the rats speak to him constantly.

Disturbingly, they sometimes seem to listen when he talks back.

== Early Life ==

Very little is known about Sam Kowalski’s life before he became Ratso. What records exist describe him as a capable but socially isolated exterminator employed throughout the older industrial districts of [[Crucible:Pacific City|Pacific City]].

Kowalski spent enormous amounts of time alone underground:

* sewer tunnels  
* abandoned utility systems  
* flooded maintenance corridors  
* collapsing subway infrastructure  

The isolation gradually affected him psychologically.

Or perhaps something else did.

== The Voices ==

According to Kowalski himself, years spent working beneath the city eventually allowed him to “hear” the rats.

At first he described this as simple intuition — a feeling that he understood their movements and behavior unusually well.

Later the understanding became literal.

Ratso claims the rats speak to him in tiny chirping voices, warning him of danger, sharing secrets, and begging for protection against humanity’s cruelty.

Whether this represents psychosis, some low-level psionic mutation, or something even stranger remains unknown.

Regardless, Kowalski believes it completely.

== Becoming Ratso ==

Eventually Sam turned against his own profession entirely. Rather than exterminating rats, he began sabotaging pest-control operations and attacking companies he believed abused or poisoned his “little friends.”

Adopting the identity '''Ratso''', Kowalski emerged from the sewers armed with homemade equipment, poisons, and improvised weapons designed for urban ambushes.

Though often viewed as bizarre or pathetic by more powerful villains, Ratso proved surprisingly dangerous in confined environments, especially underground.

He later found companionship among fellow outcasts and sewer-dwellers within [[Crucible:The Vermin|the Vermin]].

== Skills ==

Before losing his grip on reality, Sam Kowalski was a highly experienced exterminator with extensive practical knowledge regarding:

* Poisons and toxins  
* Traps and containment systems  
* Urban sewer infrastructure  
* Pest-control chemicals  
* Underground navigation and survival  

Ratso is also remarkably stealthy within sewer systems and hidden maintenance networks.

He knows the city beneath the city.

== Technology ==

Ratso’s primary weapon is a double-barreled '''trapper gun''' capable of firing specialized entangling projectiles designed to immobilize targets.

His arsenal also includes:

* Industrial poisons  
* Chemical dispersal devices  
* Traps and snares  
* Improvised sewer weapons  
* Homemade protective gear  

Much of his equipment appears cobbled together from scavenged extermination hardware and sewer salvage.

It smells exactly how you would expect.

== Personality ==

Ratso is unstable, paranoid, filthy, oddly sentimental, and deeply disconnected from ordinary society. He genuinely believes rats are misunderstood creatures far more loyal and compassionate than humans.

To him, humanity poisons, destroys, and betrays.

Rats survive.

Though mentally disturbed, Ratso is not purely malicious. He often displays genuine empathy toward animals, society’s outcasts, and people living beneath the notice of the wealthy and powerful.

Unfortunately, he also reacts violently toward anyone he believes threatens his “family” of rats.

And there are a lot of rats.

== The Vermin ==

Ratso eventually joined [[Crucible:The Vermin|the Vermin]], a loose collection of sewer-dwelling and grotesque-themed villains who operated primarily beneath urban environments.

Among the Vermin, Ratso found something close to acceptance.

Which probably says worrying things about everyone involved.

== Legacy ==

Ratso became one of the stranger recurring street-level villains of the modern era and an occasional enemy of heroes operating in [[Crucible:Pacific City|Pacific City]]. His stories mixed urban decay, sewer horror, black comedy, and tragic madness into a bizarre but memorable comic-book rogue.

Because Sam Kowalski spent so long alone beneath the city...

that eventually the rats became the only friends he trusted.
