'''Southside''' was the bizarre cyborg gangster identity of '''Jonny “Rokko” Sokko''', a Chicago mobster of the 1930s who vanished under mysterious circumstances and later returned transformed by alien experimentation into a nearly indestructible criminal machine. Combining old-school gangster swagger with advanced extraterrestrial technology, Southside became one of the strangest recurring villains of the Silver Age.

To many heroes, he seemed less like a normal supervillain than a gangster movie that had crashed into science fiction and refused to leave.

== Early Criminal Career ==

Before his disappearance, Jonny Sokko operated as a rising gangster on Chicago’s South Side during the violent years of Prohibition-era organized crime. Clever, ruthless, and deeply ambitious, Sokko built his reputation through racketeering, smuggling, armed robbery, and gang violence.

Unlike some mobsters, however, Sokko genuinely enjoyed the theatrical side of criminal life. He cultivated the image of a fast-talking underworld operator straight out of a pulp magazine, complete with expensive suits, street slang, and dramatic public bravado.

Authorities considered him dangerous.

The newspapers considered him colorful.

Then one stormy night, he vanished completely.

== Alien Abduction ==

According to later accounts — most of which sounded completely insane at the time — Sokko had been abducted by extraterrestrials for unknown experimental purposes.

The alien beings apparently viewed humans as interesting biological specimens and subjected Sokko to extensive invasive experimentation. Large portions of his anatomy were replaced or augmented with advanced cybernetic systems far beyond Earth technology of the era.

Why the aliens eventually returned him remains unclear.

Possibly they simply lost interest.

Possibly they regretted their decision.

== Return To Earth ==

Sokko reappeared during the 1950s, decades after his disappearance, physically unchanged by age and equipped with bizarre alien abilities that rendered him enormously dangerous.

Adopting the name '''Southside''', he attempted to rebuild his old criminal empire using extraterrestrial technology, enhanced physical abilities, and near invulnerability.

Unfortunately for him, the world had changed while he was gone.

His operations quickly drew the attention of heroes such as [[Crucible:Janie Saturn|Janie Saturn]], whose investigations eventually led to Southside’s defeat.

Even so, authorities struggled to contain him permanently due to the extraordinary resilience of his cybernetic body.

== Revival And The Guardians ==

Years later, Southside resurfaced once again during the era of the first [[Crucible:The Guardians|Guardians]] team, launching another crime spree fueled by equal parts greed, nostalgia, and sheer refusal to stay gone.

By this point, he had become almost mythological within criminal circles — the immortal gangster from another age who kept returning with alien weapons and impossible survival stories.

The Guardians eventually captured him following a series of destructive confrontations.

Afterward, his fate became uncertain.

Which, historically speaking, usually means he is still out there somewhere.

== Cybernetic Enhancements ==

Southside’s alien modifications granted him capabilities far beyond ordinary humans.

His enhancements included:

* Superhuman speed
* Enhanced agility
* Reinforced durability
* Near invulnerability
* Cybernetic reflexes
* Resistance to aging and disease

Much of his internal anatomy had been replaced with unknown extraterrestrial systems whose exact function Earth scientists never fully understood.

Attempts to reverse-engineer the technology achieved limited success at best.

== Weapons ==

Southside’s signature weapon was an alien energy projector designed in the shape of a classic tommy gun, reflecting either his own aesthetic preferences or a very strange sense of humor on the aliens’ part.

The weapon could fire devastating energy bursts while retaining the iconic silhouette and handling style of a Prohibition-era submachine gun.

Southside loved it immediately.

== Skills ==

Even before his transformation, Sokko was an experienced career criminal.

His expertise included:

* Organized crime operations
* Intimidation
* Street survival
* Armed robbery
* Gang leadership
* Criminal networking

Despite his alien upgrades, Southside never lost his fundamentally gangster mentality. He approached futuristic technology the same way an old mobster approaches a baseball bat:

if it works, use it.

== Personality ==

Southside remained loud, cocky, theatrical, and aggressively old-fashioned even decades after his original era disappeared. He spoke in exaggerated underworld slang, dressed like a gangster from another century, and treated most modern developments with open contempt.

At times he seemed almost comedic.

Then the energy tommy gun came out.

Beneath the swagger, however, Sokko possessed a survivor’s ruthlessness and deep resentment toward a world that moved on without him. His repeated attempts to rebuild criminal empires often felt less like greed and more like a desperate refusal to become obsolete.

The future happened.

Southside took it personally.

== Legacy ==

Southside became one of the Silver Age’s great “weird menace” villains, blending gangster fiction, alien abduction mythology, retro-futurism, and comic-book cyborg action into a uniquely memorable antagonist.

Because Jonny Sokko vanished during the Depression and came back as a machine.

And somehow remained exactly the same hoodlum underneath.
