'''Tombstone''' is the undead criminal identity of '''Garrison Gravel''', a Depression-era bank robber and murderer whose death during a failed heist led to a supernatural bargain that condemned him to eternal existence somewhere between life and death. Neither fully alive nor truly deceased, Tombstone has wandered the decades as an immortal outlaw, repeatedly resurfacing to battle heroes such as [[Crucible:Kodiak|Kodiak]] and [[Crucible:Rebel|Rebel]].

Part gangster ghost story, part supernatural bruiser, Tombstone became one of the strangest recurring villains of the modern era — a relic of old American crime dragged endlessly through time by forces even he barely understands.

== Garrison Gravel ==

Garrison Gravel was born in a small Midwestern town in the early years of the twentieth century and displayed violent tendencies almost from childhood. By adolescence he had already accumulated arrests for theft, assault, vandalism, and armed robbery, cycling repeatedly through reform schools and juvenile detention systems.

Nothing corrected him.

Gravel possessed charm when he wanted to use it, but beneath the swagger there was always a cold, reckless cruelty. As an adult during the turbulent years of the Depression, he drifted naturally into organized crime, becoming a stickup man and bank robber operating across rural America.

He admired gangsters of the era and deliberately cultivated the image of a hard-bitten outlaw. Fast cars, tailored suits, shotguns, and notoriety mattered more to him than money itself.

He wanted to be feared.

For a while, he succeeded.

== Death In The 1930s ==

Gravel’s criminal career ended violently during a disastrous bank robbery in the 1930s. Federal agents cornered his gang after a botched escape, and the resulting gunfight left most of the crew dead.

Garrison Gravel died full of bullets in the dirt beside a wrecked getaway car.

That should have been the end of the story.

It was not.

== The Bargain ==

Somewhere beyond death, Gravel encountered a demonic entity whose true identity remains unknown. Exactly why the creature took interest in him has never been fully explained. Tombstone himself rarely speaks clearly about the event, and when he does, his stories contradict each other.

What is known is this:

Gravel made a deal.

In exchange for his soul, or perhaps something even worse, he was returned to Earth in a corrupted immortal state. He could no longer truly live, but neither could he fully die. His body became an unnatural thing — part corpse, part animate supernatural vessel.

The demon had granted him eternity.

Not mercy.

== Tombstone ==

After clawing his way back into the world of the living, Gravel adopted the name '''Tombstone''' and resumed his criminal life with terrifying new advantages. Bullets no longer stopped him easily. Injuries healed with unnatural persistence. Time itself seemed unable to age him properly.

The decades rolled forward.

Tombstone remained.

Unlike vampires or traditional undead creatures, Tombstone does not feed upon blood or life force. His immortality appears sustained entirely through the infernal pact binding him to existence. This leaves him in a perpetually decayed but functional state — pale, corpse-like, and disturbingly cold to the touch.

He often dresses like a gangster from another era because, in many ways, he still is one.

== Powers And Abilities ==

Tombstone possesses supernatural physical resilience and strength derived from his infernal condition.

His abilities include:

* Superhuman strength
* Extreme durability
* Limited regeneration
* Functional immortality
* Resistance to pain and injury
* Reduced biological vulnerability

Though difficult to destroy permanently, Tombstone is not invulnerable. Massive trauma can incapacitate him temporarily, but he inevitably returns unless supernatural methods are used to disrupt the demonic forces sustaining him.

Witnesses have described his body as feeling “wrong,” as though it exists only partially within normal reality.

== Personality ==

Despite decades of undeath, Garrison Gravel remains recognizably the same criminal he was in life: arrogant, violent, foul-mouthed, and deeply self-destructive. He retains the swagger and habits of a Depression-era outlaw, speaking with old-fashioned slang and carrying himself like a hoodlum who never realized the world changed around him.

At the same time, immortality has worn away much of whatever humanity he once possessed.

Tombstone drinks heavily despite no longer needing alcohol biologically. He drifts between criminal alliances, violent outbursts, and periods of bitter reflection. Beneath the bravado lies a man who gradually understands he trapped himself in something far worse than death.

But regret rarely lasts long with him.

Violence comes easier.

== Kodiak And Rebel ==

Over the decades, Tombstone repeatedly crossed paths with [[Crucible:Kodiak|Kodiak]] and [[Crucible:Rebel|Rebel]], both of whom became particularly effective at dealing with his blend of brutality and supernatural resilience.

Kodiak viewed Tombstone as a dangerous predator incapable of redemption.

Rebel, perhaps because of his own Southern Gothic encounters with the supernatural, occasionally saw traces of tragedy buried beneath Gravel’s monstrous exterior.

Tombstone hated them both for different reasons.

== Alliance With Bedlam ==

In recent years Tombstone has occasionally been associated with [[Crucible:Bedlam|Bedlam]], whose chaotic personality and apocalyptic tendencies oddly complement Tombstone’s nihilistic outlook. Together, the two have proven especially dangerous, combining supernatural resilience with unpredictable violence.

Observers note that Tombstone seems less amused and more weary during these modern appearances.

Immortality, it turns out, becomes exhausting.

== Legacy ==

Tombstone became one of the defining undead anti-gangster villains of the modern era, blending Depression-era crime fiction, supernatural horror, infernal bargains, and immortal drifter mythology into a recurring enemy of Kodiak and Rebel.

Because Garrison Gravel got exactly what countless criminals dream about: one more chance.

And then another.

And another.

Forever.
