== Background ==

Emil Vargos was once a respected industrial chemist whose research focused on waste neutralization, atmospheric purification, and chemical containment. His work promised to make dangerous industries cleaner and safer, and for several years he was regarded as one of the rising figures in applied biochemistry.

That career ended after a catastrophic accident at a private research facility exposed Vargos to a volatile mixture of experimental compounds.

He survived, but the exposure altered him. His body developed a remarkable resistance to poisons, pathogens, corrosives, and airborne contaminants. His mind, however, became increasingly unstable.
