DMWHeader = Dr. Darius Darke = "No, I am not a wizard. Wizards are amateurs." β Darius Darke Darius Darke is one of the world's most famous stage magicians, illusionists, escape artists, and students of the unusual. Equally at home on a theater stage, in an ancient tomb, aboard an airship, or chained inside a sinking submarine, Darke has built an international reputation as a master of mystery. A longtime member of the Apex City Explorer's Society, Darke is one of the closest associates of Blaze Cartwright and The Actuary. The three men have shared countless adventures across the globe and beyond. Whether Darius possesses genuine supernatural powers remains a subject of fierce debate. Darke himself finds the question amusing. == The World's Greatest Magician == By the beginning of the Miracle Age, Darius Darke had already become one of the most celebrated entertainers on Earth. Performing before packed audiences throughout Europe, Asia, and the Americas, he developed a repertoire of illusions so spectacular that many spectators refused to believe they were tricks. His performances have included disappearances, escapes, levitations, transformations, impossible predictions, and feats that continue to perplex professional magicians. Numerous imitators have attempted to duplicate his most famous acts. Most have failed. Several have required hospitalization. == The Darke Mystery == The central mystery surrounding Darius Darke is deceptively simple: How much of it is real? Professional magicians generally insist that every feat performed by Darke must ultimately have a rational explanation. Many occult scholars disagree. Darke himself refuses to clarify the matter. He has repeatedly stated: "A magician who explains his secrets is merely an accountant with stage fright." The resulting uncertainty has become part of his legend. == Student of the Strange == Unlike most stage performers, Darke possesses a genuine scholarly interest in myths, legends, folklore, archaeology, and the occult traditions of countless cultures. Over the years he has amassed one of the largest private collections of rare manuscripts, magical artifacts, and unusual curiosities in the world. His library is rumored to contain books found nowhere else on Earth. Darke neither confirms nor denies this. == Escape Artist == Among the public, Darke is perhaps best known for his seemingly impossible escapes. Handcuffs, chains, safes, prison cells, submerged tanks, straitjackets, locked vaults, and elaborate death traps have all failed to contain him for long. One famous incident involved Darke escaping from a steel box that had been sealed inside a bank vault and guarded continuously by police. When the vault was opened, the box remained locked. Darke was discovered sitting in the chief inspector's office drinking tea. The explanation was never revealed. == The ACES == Darius Darke joined the Apex City Explorer's Society shortly after meeting Blaze Cartwright during an expedition in Egypt. Accounts differ regarding the details of their first meeting. Darke claims he rescued Blaze from a death trap. Blaze claims he rescued Darke from a death trap. The Actuary maintains that both accounts are mathematically improbable. Regardless, the three men quickly became close friends. Darke's combination of showmanship, intelligence, infiltration skills, and encyclopedic knowledge of myths and legends has repeatedly proven invaluable during ACES expeditions. == The Impossible Gentleman == Unlike Blaze's relentless optimism or The Actuary's analytical precision, Darius Darke approaches life as though it were a grand performance. He dresses impeccably. He speaks dramatically. He enjoys entrances. Friends have observed that Darke appears physically incapable of entering a room without making it memorable. Blaze once remarked: "I've seen Darius arrive by autogyro, submarine, elephant, and hot-air balloon. At this point I assume he regards doors as a personal failure." == A Question of Magic == The question of whether Darke possesses genuine magical abilities has never been conclusively answered. Certainly he possesses extraordinary skill, dexterity, perception, and knowledge. Yet there remain incidents for which no satisfactory explanation has ever been offered. Witnesses have reported seeing him appear where he could not possibly have been. Others claim he has accurately predicted future events. Several respected scholars insist they have observed feats that cannot be explained by trickery alone. Darke's response remains unchanged: "My dear fellow, reality is far stranger than magic." == Public Reputation == To audiences, Darius Darke is the greatest magician alive. To criminals, he is a frustrating and unpredictable adversary. To scholars, he is an irritating source of half-answers and impossible stories. To Blaze Cartwright, he is one of the most trusted companions a man could ask for. To newspaper editors, he is excellent for circulation. == In The Press == <div class="dmw-quote"> "DARIUS DARKE ESCAPES FROM COUNTY JAIL. HAD NOT BEEN ARRESTED."<br> β Apex Evening Bulletin, 1934 </div> <div class="dmw-quote"> "MAGICIAN REFUSES TO EXPLAIN HOW HE ENTERED LOCKED ROOM."<br> β The Daily Chronicle, 1932 </div> <div class="dmw-quote"> "PROFESSOR DECLARES DARKE FRAUD. SPENDS THREE HOURS INSIDE OWN COAT CLOSET."<br> β Metropolitan News, 1935 </div> <div class="dmw-quote"> "LOCAL MAN ESCAPES DEATH TRAP, APOLOGIZES FOR BEING LATE TO DINNER."<br> β Apex Gazette, 1936 </div> <div class="dmw-quote"> "IF DARKE IS CHEATING, HE IS CHEATING AT REALITY ITSELF."<br> β The Illustrated Observer, 1937 </div> DMWNav
