When the demonic aliens called the D'Harque invaded Earth, a dimensional rift was opened in the skies above Los Angeles. The rift showed the skies above the D'Harque's homeworld, a dimension of perpetual darkness. After the invasion was defeated by Knight/Watch, the rift stayed overhead, shrouding part of the city with its own zone of night. The alien, starlit sky depicted overhead never changes, blocking out the sunlight. Local folks started calling the affected area Night City.

Night City has become a magnet for odd and unusual beings of all kinds: superhumans, mutants, sorcerers, demons, vampires, and aliens. Criminals, smugglers, and lowlifes of all kinds congregate in the nightspots and alleyways.
