Real Name: Deacon (Deke) Slye; currently known as "Johnny Knox".
Background: Deke Slye is former cat burglar whose mentor and adoptive father, a criminal who used the nom de crime the Duke of New York, was killed by the crime boss Petro. He swore revenge and took up life as a vigilante. Shadow was active for years on the New York City crimefighting scene and was a founding member of the Outsiders. He later partnered with, and was romantically involved with, Maverick for a period. He also worked with Kodiak, Gunslinger, and Seeker at different times.
For some years, he was considered a crimelord himself by the NYPD, but this was a ruse he concocted to allow him to infiltrate the New York mobs.

With his allies, he eventually gathered evidence that led to the arrest and imprisonment of the crime boss Petro. However, during the process, Shadow was himself arrested for multiple counts of burglary stretching back several years. Facing several long sentences, the secret espionage agency Black Light offered him an alternative: work for them as an operative and avoid prison. You better believe he took that job. Now he is a special agent for the secretive organization, sent on missions that require stealth and infiltration. Guy's a natural.

Skills: Shadow is a highly skilled cat burglar and sneak thief, expert at climbing, stealth, breaking and entering. He also is a talented acrobat and pickpocket and experienced con artist. He has extensive training in hand-to-hand combat and holds a high-level black belt in Okinawan karate. His long career as an outlaw gave him a vast network of underworld contacts. His Black Light training has also given him a variety of spy and tradecraft skills.
Technology: Shadow makes extensive use of climbing and rappelling equipment and burglary tools, as well as a wide range of spy technology provided by Black Light.
