Background

Rory Callahan, known exclusively as Callahan to his employers, is the butler of the Unity League. Dour, immaculate, and unflappable, he is as much a fixture of Unity Hall as its meeting chambers, trophy rooms, and secret passages.

Callahan entered household service as a young Irish immigrant to the United States. When the Second World War broke out, he volunteered for dangerous duty with a special branch of the American military, serving for a time under Maximilian Hellstrom. He does not speak of those years, but those who have seen him in a crisis understand that his wartime service involved more than polishing silver and keeping secrets.

After the war, Callahan returned to civilian life and entered the employ of the Grace family. His discretion, discipline, and terrifying competence eventually brought him to the attention of the Unity League, who offered him the position of chief of domestic service at Unity Hall.

Skills And Personality

Callahan is a skilled domestic manager, a master of protocol, and a man who can maintain perfect professional composure while the ceiling is collapsing and supervillains are blasting through the walls. He knows every corridor, service passage, security panel, and linen closet in Unity Hall.

He is also, when riled, a formidable combatant. His exact training remains a mystery, but more than one intruder has discovered that the League’s butler is not merely decorative.

Callahan is famed for his dry, cutting remarks, delivered with such perfect restraint that they often take several seconds to wound.

Callahan represents the old heroic household tradition of the indispensable civilian aide: neither sidekick nor superhero, but the person who keeps the legends fed, dressed, scheduled, and occasionally alive.
