Among the greatest heroes of the Silver Age, the Crusaders were renowned and beloved the world over. From their base in New York City, Crusader Central, they battled such foes as the Red Wraith and HAVOC.

The Crusaders membership included:
- Mentor (John Norman) was a genius scholar who gained powerful psychic powers from an experimental device. He could project his mental powers at continental distances.
- Juggernaut (Drake Michaels) was a scrawny biochemist and inventor who developed a pill that would boost his size, strength and toughness to superhuman levels.
- Starblaze (Kira Michaels) was a trained nuclear engineer. Bombarded by dangerous radiation, she developed the ability to fire heat and energy from her body. She later married Drake Michaels.
- Puma (Robert Lee Jackson) was an American soldier and spy who was captured by Communists and subjected to biological experiments. He emerged with the ability to teleport, which combined with his hand-to-hand fighting abilities, made him a formidable combatant.
The Crusaders team originally included Mentor's good friend Lightmaster, but he later betrayed them and became a supervillain under the name Lucifer.
After a long career, the Crusaders were killed on a mission to deep space, when their spacecraft was caught in a supernova blast on the edge of Karnak space.
