“Darling, if you can see me, I’ve made a mistake.”
— Magpie
Magpie is the Golden Age identity of Margaret Piedmont, a glamorous nightclub singer and one of the most accomplished cat-burglars of her era. Known for elegance, daring, and precision, she later turned her talents toward heroism as an associate of the Victory Squadron.
Background
[edit]By night, Margaret Piedmont was a celebrated nightclub singer, performing for elite audiences in the world’s great cities. By later night, she was Magpie, an international cat-burglar whose exploits became the stuff of rumor and legend.
From the casinos of Monte Carlo to the financial centers of New York, Magpie built a reputation for impossible thefts carried out with style and surgical precision. She did not smash or bludgeon her way through obstacles; she slipped past them, leaving little more than a whisper behind.
Her career eventually brought her into conflict with the Talon, one of the most dangerous figures of the Golden Age. Outmatched and pursued, Margaret sought refuge with the Victory Squadron.
Redemption
[edit]What began as a necessity became a turning point. Under the Squadron’s protection and influence, Magpie chose to redirect her talents. Her knowledge of infiltration, evasion, and high-security environments proved invaluable to the team.
She did not stop being Magpie. She changed what Magpie meant.
During this time, she formed a close partnership with the Black Eagle, which developed into a romantic relationship. The pairing became one of the more notable alliances of the Golden Age, combining stealth and precision with aerial power.
Skills
[edit]Magpie is remembered as one of the finest thieves of the Golden Age.
- Master of stealth and infiltration
- Expert lockpicker and safecracker
- Skilled aerial acrobat
- Exceptional agility and balance
Her approach favored finesse over force, and she rarely failed once committed to a target.
Technology
[edit]Magpie relied on a compact but highly effective toolkit.
- Professional-grade thieves’ tools
- Concealed climbing and entry equipment
- Lightweight gear suited for mobility and escape
She was known to carry her tools at all times, whether performing or operating in the field.
Personality
[edit]Margaret Piedmont was poised, witty, and self-possessed. She cultivated an air of charm and sophistication, but beneath it was a sharp, calculating mind. Even after turning toward heroism, she retained her independence and resisted being fully defined by any group.
She did not apologize for what she had been; she chose what her skills would serve.
Reputation
[edit]In her criminal career, Magpie was both feared and admired, a figure of near-mythic skill. Among the Victory Squadron, she became a trusted specialist, particularly in operations requiring subtlety and precision.
That dual reputation remains central to her place in Golden Age history. Magpie is not remembered as a thief who simply became respectable, but as a woman who carried the talents, style, and nerve of a master burglar into the heroic world without losing the qualities that made her dangerous.
Legacy
[edit]Magpie occupies a distinctive place in the Golden Age: part underworld legend, part wartime heroine, and part romantic mystery. Her story is one of transformation without erasure. She stepped out of the shadows when history required it, but never entirely belonged to the daylight.
Whether Margaret Piedmont survived into later decades remains unknown. What endures is the Magpie identity itself: elegant, elusive, and impossible to separate from the glittering danger of the age that made her famous.
