“Don’t blink. I’ll already be behind you.”
— Puma
Puma was the heroic identity of Robert Lee Jackson, a former American super-spy whose career in espionage ended with a transformation that made him one of the most agile and elusive heroes of the Silver Age. A core member of the Crusaders, he combined covert training with superhuman speed and short-range teleportation.
Background
[edit]Robert Lee Jackson operated behind the Iron Curtain as a highly trained intelligence agent, tasked with acquiring sensitive technologies and disrupting hostile operations. During one such mission, he sought to recover a mysterious experimental serum believed to enhance human capabilities.
He succeeded.
He was also captured.
Interrogated and deemed expendable, Jackson was injected with an overdose of the very serum he had attempted to steal. The expectation was that the process would kill him.
It did not.
Transformation
[edit]Instead of dying, Jackson’s body adapted to the serum, developing enhanced speed, reflexes, and a unique ability he later described as “blinking”—the capacity to instantaneously teleport across short distances. Using these new abilities, he escaped captivity and returned to the United States.
He did not return to espionage.
He chose something else.
The Crusaders
[edit]Adopting his former codename as a public identity, Jackson became Puma and entered the world of costumed heroics. His skills and powers quickly attracted the attention of Mentor, who recruited him into the Crusaders.
Within the team, Puma became a consistent presence, valued for his speed, adaptability, and ability to operate in situations requiring precision and discretion. His background made him particularly effective in missions involving infiltration or rapid response.
Powers
[edit]Puma’s abilities made him exceptionally difficult to counter.
- Enhanced Speed and Reflexes – Reaction time far beyond normal human limits
- Superhuman Agility – Exceptional balance and coordination
- Short-Range Teleportation (“Blinking”) – Instant movement across short distances
His powers emphasized movement and positioning rather than raw force.
Skills
[edit]Jackson’s training remained central to his effectiveness.
- Expert practitioner of judo
- Advanced espionage training
- Skilled in stealth, infiltration, and deception
He approached combat as a matter of control.
Personality
[edit]Puma was disciplined, focused, and accustomed to operating in high-risk environments. His transition from spy to hero did not erase his past, but it redirected it, channeling his training into a more visible and accountable role.
He preferred action to explanation.
Reputation
[edit]Among the Crusaders, Puma was regarded as one of their most reliable operatives, a hero who could be counted on to execute complex tasks with minimal oversight. His ability to appear, act, and vanish made him particularly effective in both combat and reconnaissance.
Among enemies, he was rarely seen clearly.
Legacy
[edit]Puma’s career bridged two worlds: the hidden conflicts of espionage and the public stage of superheroics. In both, he demonstrated the same qualities—precision, adaptability, and control—leaving behind a reputation as a figure who moved faster than events could catch him.
He did not remain long.
He made an impact anyway.
