== Background ==

Barton Brittan was a police officer whose life was destroyed when his family was wiped out by mobsters in the employ of [[Crucible:The Talon|the Talon]]. The crime shattered his faith in lawful procedure and convinced him that conventional justice could not reach the men who truly ruled the underworld.

Swearing revenge, Brittan abandoned the limits of the badge and began operating outside the law as '''the Hangman'''.

Unlike many costumed heroes of the Golden Age, the Hangman did not merely seek to capture criminals. He hunted them. His methods were brutal, direct, and final, earning him a terrifying reputation among mobsters and a deeply uneasy one among other heroes.
