"For I am Justice!"
— The Hangman
The Hangman is the vigilante identity of Barton Brittan, a former police officer whose war against crime began after mobsters working for the Talon murdered his family. Grim, relentless, and willing to cross lines other heroes would not, the Hangman became one of the darker figures of the Golden Age.
Background
[edit]Barton Brittan was a police officer whose life was destroyed when his family was wiped out by mobsters in the employ of the Talon. The crime shattered his faith in lawful procedure and convinced him that conventional justice could not reach the men who truly ruled the underworld.
Swearing revenge, Brittan abandoned the limits of the badge and began operating outside the law as the Hangman.
Unlike many costumed heroes of the Golden Age, the Hangman did not merely seek to capture criminals. He hunted them. His methods were brutal, direct, and final, earning him a terrifying reputation among mobsters and a deeply uneasy one among other heroes.
Career
[edit]The Hangman’s crusade brought him into repeated conflict with the criminal underworld, especially organizations connected to the Talon. His knowledge of police methods, informant networks, and street-level crime allowed him to strike with precision and disappear before the authorities could respond.
His ruthlessness also brought him into conflict with other superheroes, including the Midnight Men. To more conventional heroes, the Hangman represented a dangerous corruption of the heroic ideal: a man fighting evil by becoming judge, jury, and executioner.
Despite this, he remained active throughout the Golden Age, a feared presence in the shadows of the city.
Powers
[edit]The Hangman possessed no superhuman abilities.
Skills
[edit]Barton Brittan was a trained police officer and capable vigilante.
- Skilled investigator with police training in detection and evidence gathering
- Experienced hand-to-hand combatant
- Proficient with firearms and other weapons
- Knowledgeable about criminal procedure, mob operations, and street-level informants
Technology
[edit]The Hangman’s signature weapon was a specialized electric noose.
- Electric noose used to incapacitate or execute enemies
- Police and vigilante equipment adapted for intimidation, pursuit, and interrogation
Personality
[edit]Brittan was driven by grief, rage, and a consuming need for vengeance. He believed that the law had failed his family, and that mercy toward hardened criminals only allowed more innocent people to suffer.
He was not without a moral code, but it was a harsh one. To the Hangman, guilt demanded punishment, and punishment was often final.
Reputation
[edit]Among criminals, the Hangman was a figure of dread.
Among heroes, he was controversial at best and dangerous at worst. His repeated clashes with the Midnight Men reflected the central question surrounding his career: whether he was a hero, a vigilante, or something frighteningly close to the criminals he hunted.
Legacy
[edit]The Hangman remains one of the Golden Age’s most troubling figures. His crusade against crime was born from real injustice, but his willingness to execute his enemies placed him outside the moral boundaries observed by most heroes.
His ultimate fate is unknown.
