Intelligent and technically gifted, Maldonado escaped much of the poverty surrounding him through academic achievement, eventually becoming a highly promising electrical engineer specializing in industrial power systems and experimental energy-transfer technologies.

For a brief time, it appeared he might build a legitimate future.

While conducting a risky experimental test involving advanced electrical transfer systems, Maldonado’s project malfunctioned catastrophically, causing multiple deaths and severe injuries.
