CCHeader <div class="codex-page codex-page--crucible-comics cc-page--organization"> = Naval Undersea Commandos = <div class="cc-quote"> "From the depths, we strike." </div> The Naval Undersea Commandos, commonly abbreviated NUCs and popularly known as the Nukes, are an elite United States Navy special operations force specializing in maritime warfare, underwater infiltration, covert assault, and high-risk global operations. Widely regarded as one of the most dangerous and capable military units in the world, the NUCs operate in environments where ordinary special forces cannot survive: beneath the ocean, inside hostile ports, aboard moving vessels, within flooded structures, and in contested coastal zones across the globe. Their existence remains officially acknowledged. The full extent of their operations does not. == Origins == The NUCs were established during the escalating geopolitical tensions of the Cold War and rapidly evolved into a specialized force designed for covert maritime operations in hostile and unconventional environments. While originally focused on underwater sabotage, reconnaissance, and amphibious assault, the unit expanded dramatically during the Silver and Bronze Ages as superhuman threats, advanced technologies, and international terrorism transformed modern warfare. By the Modern Age, the NUCs had become one of the United States military’s premier rapid-response special operations units, frequently deployed against threats involving metahumans, rogue technologies, covert invasions, and catastrophic security breaches. == Training == NUC training is considered among the harshest military programs in existence. Recruits undergo brutal physical conditioning, advanced combat instruction, underwater survival training, demolition expertise, tactical infiltration exercises, and psychological endurance testing designed to eliminate all but the most capable candidates. Training includes: * Naval combat operations * Underwater infiltration * Demolitions and sabotage * Advanced weapons systems * Hand-to-hand combat * Diving and submersible operations * Urban warfare * Survival and escape training * Counter-terrorism tactics * Hostage rescue * Metahuman threat response Graduates are expected to function effectively in complete darkness, extreme pressure environments, hostile weather conditions, and combat scenarios where extraction may be impossible. == Operations == The NUCs are deployed worldwide for missions involving: * Maritime counter-terrorism * Underwater demolition * Covert reconnaissance * Hostage rescue * Sabotage operations * Coastal assault * Counter-piracy * Deep-sea recovery * Metahuman intervention support * Classified black operations Though primarily naval in focus, the unit frequently operates far inland during specialized missions involving strategic infrastructure, hidden facilities, or superhuman threats. Their missions are often classified for decades. == NUC Team 1 == The legendary NUC Team 1 is considered the organization’s premier operational unit and has participated in some of the most dangerous military actions of the Modern Age. Most famously, NUC Team 1 worked alongside several superheroes during the final operation against the supervillain Sargon. The mission, involving underwater combat, advanced weaponry, and catastrophic structural collapse, became one of the defining military-superhero collaborations of its era. The operation cemented the NUCs’ reputation as one of the few conventional military organizations capable of operating effectively beside superheroes during extreme crises. == Equipment == The NUCs utilize highly advanced military hardware specifically adapted for underwater and amphibious warfare. Their equipment includes: * Reinforced combat diving systems * Underwater propulsion units * Tactical sonar systems * Amphibious assault armor * Specialized demolitions equipment * Experimental underwater firearms * Mini-submersibles * Coastal infiltration craft * Pressure-resistant communications systems Some classified divisions reportedly employ prototype exoskeletons, stealth diving systems, and anti-metahuman tactical technologies. == Notable Former Members == Several famous figures within the Crucible Universe previously served in the NUCs before pursuing other careers. === Malcolm Cage === A veteran operative known for discipline, tactical expertise, and leadership under pressure. He served as a senior staff sergeant during the US raid on Sargon's HQ, and was injured in the action. === Stefan Killinger === A controversial former NUC whose later career brought him into increasingly dangerous and morally ambiguous territory. === Paul Carter === Later known publicly as Peacemaker, Carter’s NUC background heavily influenced his tactical methods and military professionalism. == Reputation == Within military circles, the NUCs command immense respect. Their survival rates, mission success records, and operational capabilities are legendary among special operations communities worldwide. To enemies, the appearance of NUC operatives often means the situation has already become extraordinarily serious. To the public, they remain mysterious figures operating beneath the surface — literally and politically. And in many cases, that is exactly where they prefer to remain. </div> CCNav
