Crucible:Super-Best Friends

The so-called Super-Best Friends was a temporary alliance of New York superheroes that ran on an informal basis during the Bronze Age. The alliance was pulled together by Overcoat after when HAVOC initiated a prolonged attack on New York City, where a new headquarters for PHASE II was opening. The group stopped a variety of HAVOC offensives, including a supervillain attack on a nearby nuclear plant, an attempt to blow up the Brooklyn Bridge, and the kidnapping of several powerful New York industrial magnates by Omega Company.

After HAVOC's attack was repulsed, the members went their separate ways, but all of them worked together again many times.

The group name was Overcoat's joke, but the name stuck.

• Kodiak (Kody Blake): a genetically engineered warrior.
• Overcoat (Ivan Ural): a Russian man of mystery.
• Manhunter (Cyrus Kempf): a hard-driving vigilante.
• Avenger (Paul Murasaki): a dangerous ninja.
• The Gauntlet (Michael Andrews): wore a set of powered gauntlets for super-strength.
• Lone Eagle (Brian Redbird): a mystical Native American hunter.

Although the alliance was short-lived, it set the stage for many future partnerships and friendships between the heroes involved.
