The Super-Best Friends were a temporary alliance of New York superheroes formed during the Bronze Age in response to the massive criminal offensive later known as the War on New York.

The team was assembled on an informal basis by Overcoat after the terrorist organization HAVOC launched a prolonged campaign against New York City during the opening of a major new PHASE II headquarters.

At the time, most of the members were younger, less experienced versions of the legendary heroes they would later become. Despite their inexperience, the group repeatedly managed to repel escalating attacks that threatened to devastate the city.

The alliance confronted numerous HAVOC operations including:

  • A supervillain assault on a nuclear power plant.
  • An attempt to destroy the Brooklyn Bridge.
  • The kidnapping of major industrial leaders by Omega Company.
  • Multiple coordinated attacks across New York’s infrastructure and transportation systems.

Though loosely organized and often chaotic, the team gradually developed strong personal bonds during the crisis.

The bizarre team name originated as one of Overcoat’s dry jokes.

Unfortunately, it stuck.

Legacy

[edit]

Though the alliance existed only briefly, the Super-Best Friends became enormously important in retrospect because so many of its members later evolved into major figures within the superhero community.

The relationships, rivalries, and friendships forged during the War on New York continued to shape superhero history for decades afterward.

Many later historians would describe the group as a turning point in the Bronze Age: the moment a new generation of heroes first emerged from the shadows of the Silver Age.
