“You get one warning. After that, I stop asking.”
Manhunter

Manhunter is the vigilante identity of Cyrus Kempf, a former soldier, engineer, and relentless street-level crimefighter operating out of Red Hook, Brooklyn. Known for his tactical precision, technical ingenuity, and uncompromising sense of justice, he is a core member of Night Shift.

Background

[edit]

Cyrus Kempf was born Cyrus Kilarny in Belfast, Ireland, to a working-class Catholic family. A gifted but troubled youth, he showed early talent in electronics—and a dangerous fascination with explosives. Drawn into a splinter group connected to the Irish Republican Army, Cyrus built devices for them before fully understanding the consequences.

That understanding came violently. One of his own bombs detonated prematurely, killing his parents and members of his community.

The event defined him.

In retaliation, Cyrus destroyed the group responsible, leaving only two survivors. With nowhere else to turn, he sought help from a teacher, Maureen Cohan, who arranged for him and his infant sister to flee to America and live with their older sister, Maggie.

In the United States, Cyrus took the name Kempf, buried his past, and rebuilt himself. He excelled academically, gained citizenship, and enlisted in the military, becoming a highly trained reconnaissance and infiltration specialist.

The Making Of Manhunter

[edit]

Cyrus returned to New York after learning his younger sister had been killed by mob violence tied to Petro. Disillusioned with the limits of the law, he chose a different path.

He became Manhunter.

Manhunter during the Bronze Age

Operating out of Red Hook, he used his military training, technical skills, and growing resources to wage a one-man war on organized crime. During a confrontation with HAVOC, he acquired an experimental antigravity vehicle—the skycycle—which became his signature mode of transport.

The Strong Persuaders

[edit]

Manhunter eventually joined the outlaw vigilante group known as the Strong Persuaders. Though effective, the group’s methods and philosophy pushed beyond even his flexible moral line. Over time, he distanced himself from them, choosing a more controlled—if still ruthless—approach.

Night Shift

[edit]

In the present day, Manhunter operates as part of Night Shift, alongside heroes such as Mistral and Overcoat. Within the team, he serves as a tactical operator and urban specialist, particularly in high-risk infiltration and surveillance missions.

Civilian Life

[edit]

In his civilian identity, Cyrus runs Elysium Electronics, a shop in Red Hook that doubles as both a legitimate business and a front for his operations. Beneath it lies Manhunter’s Lair, a hidden base built within an abandoned pneumatic rail station.

Cyrus has invested heavily in the surrounding neighborhood, purchasing adjacent lots and converting them into community space. He lives with his sister Maggie and helps raise his nephew Milo Murray, who is beginning to suspect that his uncle is not quite the laid-back electronics tinkerer he appears to be.

Powers And Skills

[edit]

Manhunter possesses no superhuman powers, but operates at an elite human level across multiple disciplines.

  • Reconnaissance And Infiltration – Military-grade stealth and operational planning
  • Martial Arts – Highly skilled close-quarters combatant
  • Driving And Piloting – Expert vehicle operator
  • Technical Expertise – Electronics, demolitions, engineering
  • Adaptive Arsenal – Frequently repurposes technology taken from defeated enemies

Technology

[edit]

Manhunter relies heavily on advanced and improvised technology.

  • Skycycle – Antigravity vehicle equipped with enhancements and weaponry
  • Custom Gear – Tools, weapons, and surveillance systems of his own design
  • Underground Base – Hidden operations center in a disused pneumatic transit system

Personality

[edit]

Cyrus Kempf is controlled, methodical, and intensely private. He carries the weight of his past without seeking absolution, channeling it instead into action. He has little patience for excuses, particularly from those who exploit others.

Despite his severity, he is deeply protective of his community. His investments in Red Hook and quiet acts of generosity reveal a man trying to build something better, even while operating in the shadows.

Reputation

[edit]

In New York’s underworld, Manhunter is spoken of in low voices—a figure who appears without warning and leaves problems permanently solved. Among civilians, he is largely unseen, though some locals suspect the truth.

A few know better.

Old Man Horowitz. Billy Chang. Others who have been helped, quietly, without explanation.

Legacy

[edit]

Manhunter represents a particular kind of hero: not a symbol, not an icon, but a presence. He does not inspire crowds or lead movements.

He makes sure the right people are still standing when the night is over.
