Kid Sputnik was the superhero identity of Kozmo Gagarin, one of the few successful subjects of the Soviet Union’s brutal New Soviet Man program. A wielder of photonic energy and a symbol of Cold War heroism, he later became a beloved figure on the New York superhero scene, remembered as much for his warmth and generosity as for his powers.

Origin

During the height of the Silver Age, the Soviet Union initiated the New Soviet Man project, an ambitious and ruthless attempt to create superhuman operatives. The program enhanced ordinary citizens into living weapons and symbols of the state, at tremendous human cost.

Most subjects did not survive.

Kozmo Gagarin did.

Still a teenager, he emerged with enhanced physical abilities and control over light and heat, becoming Kid Sputnik, one of the USSR’s most visible young champions.

Soviet Hero

Kid Sputnik fought alongside Red Star, representing Soviet power and ideology on the global stage. Though often seen as a junior partner or “sidekick,” Kozmo carried himself with courage and professionalism, earning respect even among his ideological rivals.

In later years, he would look back on those days—battling Western heroes across the world—as “the great days,” recalling them with surprising fondness rather than bitterness.

PHASE II

Kid Sputnik was eventually assigned to PHASE II as part of international cooperation efforts. There, he worked alongside former adversaries and began forming lasting friendships across political lines.

Those connections would define the rest of his life.

Defection And New Life

During the Bronze Age, Kozmo defected to the United States and settled in New York City. There, he opened a tavern called The Little Bear, filling it with memorabilia from his career—costumes, photos, relics of battles long past.

The Little Bear quickly became a gathering place for the superhero community.

Kozmo himself became a fixture of the New York scene: warm, funny, generous, and endlessly welcoming. Though he had once been treated as a secondary figure in the field, he developed a quiet gravitas that drew others to him. Heroes, veterans, and newcomers alike found their way to his bar.

He was friends with nearly everyone who had survived those earlier eras.

Final Years

The experiments that created Kid Sputnik came at a cost. Kozmo aged prematurely, his body unable to fully withstand the long-term effects of the treatments that had given him his powers.

His heavy smoking habit did not help matters.

Over time, he developed multiple cancers and his health declined rapidly. Despite this, he remained active in his community for as long as he could.

He died during the Bronze Age.

His funeral was attended by virtually every major figure in the superhero community—heroes, allies, and even former enemies—paying their respects to a man who had outgrown the role he had been given.

In his will, he left The Little Bear to his friend Kodiak, who later reopened it as The Bear’s Den.

Kid Sputnik’s legacy is not just that of a Cold War superhuman, but of a man who bridged divides—political, personal, and generational. He began as a weapon, became a hero, and ended as something rarer:

A friend to all sides.
