Topaz was the superhuman identity forced upon Carolyn Barnes after she became host to a hostile alien mindcrystal opposed to the cosmic entity bonded with her sister, Jade. Though outwardly transformed into a powerful cosmic supervillain, Carolyn remained trapped within her own body for much of her existence as Topaz, struggling desperately against the crystal’s influence and the destruction it compelled her to unleash.

Her story became one of the great tragic superhuman narratives of the Bronze Age — not the corruption of a hero into villainy, but the slow erasure of a good person by something alien, ancient, and merciless.

Carolyn Barnes

Before her transformation, Carolyn Barnes was known as an intelligent, compassionate, and highly driven young woman pursuing a career in medicine. The younger sister of Melissa Barnes, later known publicly as Jade, Carolyn shared a close bond with her sister despite their very different personalities.

Where Melissa possessed confidence and force of will, Carolyn was quieter and more introspective. Friends and classmates described her as gentle, empathetic, and deeply dedicated to helping others. By all accounts, she was only months away from beginning her professional medical career when her life changed forever.

The change began with the arrival of the crystal.

The Alien Mindcrystals

The cosmic crystal that empowered Jade was not unique.

Unknown to humanity at the time, the universe contained other crystalline intelligences — ancient psionic entities capable of bonding with sentient hosts and channeling immense cosmic energies through them. Some coexisted symbiotically with their hosts.

Others dominated them completely.

The entity that found Carolyn Barnes belonged firmly to the latter category.

Hostile to Jade’s crystal and driven by motives that remain poorly understood, the alien intelligence attached itself to Carolyn and rapidly overwhelmed her personality. The process transformed her physically and mentally, reshaping her into the being known as Topaz.

Though Carolyn survived within the merged consciousness, she increasingly lost the ability to control her own actions.

Enemy Of Jade

Under the crystal’s influence, Topaz became one of Jade’s deadliest enemies. The alien intelligence viewed Jade and her symbiotic crystal counterpart as rivals or threats and repeatedly forced Carolyn into violent confrontations against her own sister.

These battles became infamous for their emotional intensity as much as their destructive scale.

Unlike many hero-versus-villain conflicts, Jade often fought while desperately attempting to save her sister rather than defeat her. During moments of emotional strain or psychological exhaustion, Carolyn’s own personality would sometimes briefly reassert itself, pleading for help or warning others before the crystal regained control.

These fleeting moments only made the tragedy worse.

The Hellrazers

During her period of greatest instability, Topaz became associated with the Hellrazers, whose willingness to embrace destructive power and moral chaos aligned well with the crystal’s increasingly aggressive behavior.

Even among the Hellrazers, however, Topaz was regarded as unpredictable and dangerous. Her emotional instability and periodic internal struggles made her difficult to control, and several members reportedly feared the alien intelligence within her more than Carolyn herself.

The crystal, for its part, appeared to grow steadily more possessive and hostile over time.

Powers And Abilities

Like her sister Jade, Topaz wielded extraordinary cosmic powers derived from the alien crystal bonded to her nervous system and consciousness.

Her known abilities included:

• Cosmic energy projection
• Flight
• Superhuman strength
• Enhanced durability
• Energy manipulation
• X-ray and penetrative vision
• High-speed movement
• Atmospheric survival

Topaz’s powers often manifested more aggressively and destructively than Jade’s, reflecting the hostile nature of the controlling crystal intelligence.

Observers frequently described her energy displays as harsher and more unstable, with violent flares of crimson, gold, and white cosmic radiation.

Carolyn Versus The Crystal

One of the defining aspects of Topaz’s history was the continuing psychological struggle between Carolyn Barnes and the alien entity controlling her body.

Unlike complete possession, the crystal did not entirely erase Carolyn’s consciousness. Instead, it suppressed, manipulated, and overwhelmed her personality while drawing upon her memories and emotions.

At times, Carolyn could still emerge briefly:

• warning heroes of danger
• sabotaging the crystal’s plans
• resisting lethal attacks
• pleading with Jade to stop her

These moments became increasingly rare as time passed.

The crystal was winning.

Death In The Sun

The conflict reached its climax during a catastrophic final confrontation between Jade and Topaz. Realizing that the crystal would eventually destroy both herself and countless others, Carolyn seized one final moment of control.

She forced Jade to kill her.

Accounts differ concerning the exact sequence of events, but the struggle ultimately ended when Topaz hurled herself into the sun during battle, using the star’s unimaginable energies to destroy the alien crystal once and for all.

Jade survived.

Topaz did not.

Or so it was believed.

Given the cosmic nature of the crystals involved, many have questioned whether Carolyn Barnes truly perished or whether fragments of the Topaz entity still survive somewhere within the solar inferno.

Personality

Carolyn Barnes was compassionate, intelligent, and selfless before her transformation. Those qualities never entirely disappeared, even beneath the crystal’s domination. Indeed, the tragedy of Topaz lay partly in the fact that Carolyn remained emotionally present enough to understand the horror of what was happening to her.

The crystal personality itself appeared cold, possessive, and fundamentally alien. It regarded human beings less as individuals than as temporary vessels or obstacles.

The resulting duality made Topaz deeply unsettling. At one moment she could appear as a ruthless cosmic conqueror.

At the next, a frightened young woman begging her sister for help.

Legacy

Topaz became one of the defining tragic villains of the Bronze Age, blending cosmic superhuman spectacle, psychological horror, sibling drama, and possession tragedy into a recurring enemy of Jade and the heroic community.

More than most supervillains, Topaz embodied the terrifying possibility that power alone is not what corrupts.

Sometimes corruption arrives from somewhere else entirely.

And sometimes the victim remains conscious enough to suffer every moment of it.
