Surge is the evolved identity of Mitchell Young, a parahuman whose transformation from costumed adventurer to living electrical entity marks one of the most dramatic reinventions in Watchstar history. Once known as Charger, Young rose from youthful hero to team leader, endured death and rebirth in a radically altered form, and ultimately chose to step away from the field on his own terms.

Background

Mitchell Young first manifested his abilities as a teenager, discovering that he could generate and manipulate electrical energy. Taking the name Charger, he joined the original Watchstar team, where his raw power and enthusiasm made him a natural fit among more experienced heroes.

He began as one of the younger members.

He did not remain that way.

Death And Transformation

During a confrontation with Sargon, Charger was seemingly killed, his physical form destroyed in an event that appeared final. For a time, he was counted among the fallen, another casualty in a conflict that claimed more than its share.

The end did not hold.

Young’s consciousness, encoded in electrical form, eventually reconstituted itself, reorganizing into a new state of being. No longer bound to a conventional body, he emerged as Surge, a living construct of energy capable of existing and acting across systems that once merely carried his power.

He did not return unchanged. He returned redefined.

Leadership Of Watchstar

As Surge, Mitchell Young assumed a more central role within Watchstar. When Gauntlet was injured, he stepped into leadership of the third team, bringing a different style to command—less formal, more adaptive, shaped by both his experience and his altered nature.

He led effectively, balancing power with judgment, and earning the trust of teammates who had once known him in a very different form.

Retirement

In later years, Surge chose to step away from active duty, prioritizing his life beyond the field. His marriage to Tamara Baines Young and the birth of their son marked a shift in focus, one that placed stability and presence above continued engagement in high-risk operations.

Unlike many heroes, he was able to leave.

And stay gone.
