Department X was a secret investigative branch of the United States government, founded after Washington, D.C. was nearly destroyed by paranormal forces in the late 1930s. Created to investigate occult threats before they could become national catastrophes, Department X became one of the government’s first organized responses to the hidden supernatural world.

Its field team battled death cults, haunted relics, Axis mystics, extradimensional incursions, and other occult menaces before and during World War II. While never publicly acknowledged, Department X’s work prevented several paranormal disasters from reaching the history books.

For a time, the occult expert Balthazar Graves assisted Department X on several cases.

History

Department X began as a quiet emergency measure. After the near-destruction of Washington, D.C. by paranormal forces, senior officials within the federal government concluded that ordinary law enforcement and military intelligence were not equipped to deal with occult threats. The new branch was given broad secrecy, limited official oversight, and authority to recruit specialists who would never have fit comfortably inside normal government service.

Its early cases were strange, violent, and poorly understood. Department X investigated blood rites in Chicago, haunted military research facilities, cursed archaeological finds, psychic conspiracies, Axis occult weapons, and ritual murders connected to ancient orders. The unit’s reports were buried, sealed, or rewritten as ordinary criminal files.

During World War II, Department X became increasingly important. Nazi Germany’s occult programs forced the United States to take paranormal warfare seriously, and Department X’s investigators found themselves operating in a shadow war alongside soldiers, spies, scientists, and mystics.

The FBI’s only historian, Cameron was recruited after he narrowly saved Chicago from a massive rite of blood sacrifice.

One of the world’s leading physicists, Einstein discovered that the Third Reich was developing powerful occult weapons and offered his services to the United States.

Wing Sun

An American of Chinese descent, Wing Sun brought expertise in Asian occult traditions at a time when few Western investigators understood their dangers.

Legacy

Department X never became famous. That was the point. Its victories were erased from newspapers, its failures hidden in sealed archives, and its surviving reports became the foundation for later government paranormal and metahuman intelligence programs.

Within PHASE II and other later agencies, Department X is remembered as one of the first serious attempts to confront the supernatural as a matter of national security rather than superstition.
