Kid Sputnik was the superhero identity of Kozmo Gagarin, one of the few successful subjects of the Soviet Union’s brutal New Soviet Man program. Gifted with control over light and heat, he served as both a symbol and weapon of the state before ultimately choosing his own path—at great personal cost.

Origin

During the height of the Silver Age, the Soviet Union initiated the New Soviet Man project, an ambitious and ruthless attempt to create superhuman operatives for the state. The program sought to enhance ordinary citizens into living embodiments of Soviet strength and progress.

The results were catastrophic.

Most subjects did not survive the process.

Kozmo Gagarin did.

Still a teenager, he emerged from the program with enhanced physical abilities and the power to manipulate photonic energy. Taking the name Kid Sputnik, he became one of the Soviet Union’s premier young heroes.

Soviet Hero

Kid Sputnik operated alongside the established Soviet champion Red Star, forming a partnership that was both symbolic and practical. Together, they represented the success of the Soviet superhuman initiative on the world stage.

Despite his youth, Kozmo was placed in high-risk situations, expected to perform not just as a hero, but as a political statement.

PHASE II

In later years, Kid Sputnik was assigned to PHASE II as part of international cooperation efforts. There, he operated alongside Western heroes, gaining broader experience and perspective beyond the ideological framework in which he had been raised.

Defection

During the Bronze Age, Kozmo Gagarin defected to the United States. The reasons for his defection were never fully detailed, but it marked a decisive break from the system that had created him.

In New York City, he attempted to build a quieter life, opening a small tavern called The Little Bear. The establishment became a gathering place for heroes, operatives, and others who lived on the margins of the extraordinary.

Final Years

Kozmo’s powers came at a cost.

Exposure to the experimental processes that had granted him his abilities also left lasting damage. Over time, he developed multiple forms of cancer, a consequence of the same forces that had made him a hero.

He died during the Bronze Age.

In his will, he left The Little Bear to the young hero Kodiak, who later reopened it under the name The Bear’s Den.

Powers

Kid Sputnik’s abilities centered on photonic energy.

He did not reject heroism.

He redefined it on his own terms.

Legacy

Kid Sputnik’s story is one of survival, service, and consequence. He was one of the few who lived through the New Soviet Man program, but the cost of that survival followed him throughout his life.

In the end, he left behind more than a legacy of power.

He left a place—a refuge—for those who came after him.
