The Vermin first banded together to offer their services to [[Sargon]] as mercenaries. However, Sargon spurned them, describing them as "a gang of loathsome ''vermin'', not fit for my company." They took his scornful words as a badge of honor and set forth to gain revenge on a world that had rejected them. Since then, they've battled most of the world's superhero teams, usually winding up in jail, but always reuniting. It's not like these guys have any other friends. Other villains still find them disgusting, but they like it that way.<gallery>

The Vermin are among the most revolting and persistent supervillain teams of the Modern Age.

The group originally came together intending to offer their services as mercenaries to the powerful criminal mastermind Sargon. Rather than hiring them, however, Sargon dismissed the would-be villains with contempt, describing them as:

"A gang of loathsome vermin, not fit for my company."

Instead of feeling insulted, the group embraced the label.

From that moment onward, they proudly called themselves the Vermin and dedicated themselves to taking revenge on a world they believed had rejected and mocked them.

The team quickly became infamous for foul-smelling hideouts, grotesque crimes, sewer-based operations, biological hazards, and chaotic attacks that left both heroes and ordinary criminals disgusted. Even many supervillains avoid associating with the Vermin whenever possible.

The Vermin themselves prefer it that way.

Though frequently defeated and imprisoned, the team has proven strangely resilient. Its members repeatedly escape custody, regroup, and return to crime with renewed enthusiasm.

As several heroes have observed, the Vermin remain together largely because nobody else on Earth can tolerate them.
