Archibald Cameron was the FBI’s only historian before becoming one of the founding field specialists of Department X.

Cameron specialized in medieval lore, forgotten sects, heresies, relic cults, coded manuscripts, and the survival of ancient ritual traditions into the modern world. His academic career took a violent turn when he accidentally ran afoul of an ancient death cult and narrowly saved the city of Chicago from a massive rite of blood sacrifice.

After that case, Department X offered him a job. Cameron accepted, though he never entirely stopped looking like a professor who had wandered into the wrong war.

Personality

Cameron was bookish, nervous, and deeply brave in the way of men who are frightened and proceed anyway. He had a dry wit, an extraordinary memory, and a tendency to lecture under fire.

Unlike many skeptics of the period, Cameron did not dismiss old legends. He understood that myths were often distorted records of real dangers, and that folklore could be a survival manual if read correctly.

Abilities

Cameron had no superhuman powers. His gifts were intellectual: languages, medieval history, religious movements, occult symbolism, manuscript analysis, and ritual reconstruction.

He was especially skilled at identifying the structure of cult activity from fragments: a symbol on a wall, a misquoted prayer, a body arranged in the wrong historical posture.

Tactics

Cameron was not a front-line fighter. In the field, he identified threats, decoded rituals, translated inscriptions, and warned the team when they were dealing with something older and more dangerous than ordinary criminal occultism.

He often worked closely with Wing Sun, whose expertise in Asian occult lore complemented Cameron’s knowledge of European traditions.

Legacy

Archibald Cameron helped establish the basic method of Department X investigation: treat folklore seriously, trace the history of the rite, identify the necessary conditions, and break the chain before the final act.
