“Identity is only biology pretending to be destiny.”
Masque

Masque is the criminal identity of Dr. Marta Beck, a brilliant biologist whose experimental cellular-restructuring serum transformed her into a living shapeshifter after a murder attempt by the corporation that employed her. Able to alter her appearance into virtually any humanoid form, Masque became one of the most elusive and psychologically dangerous infiltrators of the modern era.

To her, identity itself is merely another costume.

Early Career

[edit]

Dr. Marta Beck was once a respected biomedical researcher specializing in advanced cellular regeneration and reconstructive medicine. Her groundbreaking work centered on a revolutionary serum capable of reshaping living human tissue through precisely controlled electrical impulses.

Beck envisioned the discovery as a miracle treatment for burn victims, trauma survivors, and the severely disfigured.

The pharmaceutical corporation funding her research envisioned something else.

Executives quickly realized that a treatment capable of permanently correcting physical disfigurement threatened several of the company’s more profitable long-term medical markets. According to Beck, internal pressure mounted almost immediately to suppress or redirect the project.

Marta refused.

That refusal nearly killed her.

Betrayal

[edit]

Determined to silence her permanently, corporate agents attempted to murder Beck by injecting her with an unstable version of her own experimental serum, believing it to be lethally toxic. They abandoned her afterward, expecting the altered compound to destroy her body.

Instead, it transformed her.

The serum destabilized Beck’s cellular structure, leaving her horribly disfigured for a time while simultaneously granting her unprecedented control over her own physical form. Her cells became mutable, responsive to conscious thought and neurological impulses.

The process also profoundly altered her psychology.

Whether the changes resulted from trauma, biochemical damage, or the intoxicating experience of becoming physically unbound from ordinary identity remains unclear.

What emerged afterward was no longer simply Dr. Marta Beck.

It was Masque.

Revenge

[edit]

Masque’s first acts involved systematic revenge against the executives and enforcers responsible for attempting to eliminate her. Using her newfound ability to impersonate others flawlessly, she infiltrated corporate facilities, manipulated identities, destroyed reputations, and orchestrated several highly publicized deaths.

Authorities struggled to pursue her because witnesses could never agree on what she looked like.

Eventually Masque realized something important:

with her abilities, she no longer needed revenge alone.

She could become anyone.

Take anything.

Go anywhere.

The temptation proved irresistible.

The Bad News

[edit]

Masque later joined forces with Doctor Sanity to form The Bad News, a villain team specializing in manipulation, psychological operations, and sophisticated criminal schemes. Within the group, Masque served as infiltrator, impersonator, and intelligence operative.

Her ability to replace allies, officials, witnesses, or even other villains made her one of the team’s most dangerous members.

Even teammates sometimes found her unsettling.

Powers

[edit]

Masque possesses near-total control over her own humanoid appearance.

Her powers include:

  • Complete humanoid shapeshifting
  • Voice and facial mimicry
  • Cellular restructuring and disguise
  • Alteration of height, build, and features
  • Rapid physical transformation

Though primarily an infiltrator, Masque can also use her abilities defensively by adapting to injuries or escaping confinement through physical alteration.

Skills

[edit]

Marta Beck remains exceptionally intelligent and highly trained.

  • Advanced biology and cellular science
  • Behavioral analysis and psychological observation
  • Acting and impersonation techniques
  • Espionage and infiltration
  • Social manipulation and deception

Over time, Masque became less a scientist pretending to be an actress and more a performer who weaponized science itself.

Technology

[edit]

Masque supplements her natural abilities with stolen and modified technology.

Most notably, she utilizes:

  • Portable holographic projection systems
  • Illusion and visual-distortion devices
  • Surveillance and infiltration equipment

These tools allow her to create deceptions even beyond what her shapeshifting alone can accomplish.

Personality

[edit]

Masque is intelligent, theatrical, emotionally detached, and deeply fascinated by identity itself. The loss of her original appearance — combined with the freedom of becoming anyone — gradually eroded her sense of fixed selfhood.

At times she seems to view ordinary people as prisoners trapped inside singular identities.

By contrast, Masque experiences life as fluid performance.

She enjoys deception not merely for practical gain, but artistically. Many of her crimes involve elaborate impersonations, psychological games, or carefully staged manipulations designed to humiliate institutions and expose how easily people trust appearances.

Yet beneath the confidence remains profound damage. Marta Beck lost not only her career and body, but any stable sense of who she originally was.

Now she wears personalities the way other people wear clothes.

Legacy

[edit]

Masque became one of the premier infiltrator villains of the modern era and one of the most difficult criminals for heroes to combat directly. Her stories blended espionage, paranoia, body horror, and psychological manipulation into some of the most unsettling adventures of the modern age.

Because fighting Masque is rarely the real problem.

The real problem is figuring out whether she is already standing beside you.
