Reaktor is the superhuman identity of Pavel Zolotov, a Soviet supersoldier created during the Silver Age through dangerous experimental radiation procedures intended to forge the ultimate protector of the communist state. Transformed into a living atomic reactor capable of generating devastating radioactive energy, Zolotov became one of the Soviet bloc’s most feared metahuman operatives and a recurring enemy of Western superheroes during the height of Cold War tensions.
Unlike many Soviet superhumans driven by cynicism or political ambition, Pavel originally believed completely in the ideals he served.
Which made him even more dangerous.
Early Life
[edit]Pavel Zolotov was born within the Soviet Union and raised during the height of Cold War ideological fervor. Athletic, disciplined, and deeply patriotic, Zolotov joined the Soviet military at a young age and rapidly distinguished himself as an ideal soldier.
Loyal.
Fearless.
Utterly committed to the state.
These qualities eventually brought him to the attention of secret Soviet scientific programs searching for candidates suitable for experimental supersoldier enhancement.
Pavel volunteered immediately.
The Reaktor Program
[edit]Soviet researchers subjected Zolotov to a series of radical atomic and bio-radiological procedures intended to transform him into a living source of controlled nuclear power.
The experiments succeeded —
at terrible cost.
Pavel’s body became a continuous generator of dangerous radiation and atomic energy. His metabolism effectively functioned like a biological reactor core, flooding him with immense strength and durability while making ordinary human contact potentially lethal.
To prevent accidental casualties, Soviet engineers constructed a heavily shielded containment suit allowing Zolotov to regulate and channel his radioactive emissions safely.
Thus Reaktor was born.
Defender Of The Motherland
[edit]Throughout the Silver Age, Reaktor operated as one of the Soviet Union’s premier state-sponsored superhumans. He served both as propaganda symbol and military asset, confronting Western heroes, protecting Soviet interests, and participating in covert metahuman operations around the globe.
To Soviet citizens, Reaktor represented the triumph of socialist science.
To Western intelligence agencies, he represented a walking nuclear disaster.
Despite his immense destructive capability, Reaktor initially viewed himself as a protector rather than conqueror. He genuinely believed his sacrifices served the greater good of humanity through the ideals of the communist state.
History complicated those beliefs considerably.
Powers

The suit:

- Protects Reaktor from destabilization
Without the suit, Pavel’s uncontrolled emissions could prove catastrophic.
Because of this, he is effectively imprisoned within the armor permanently.
This isolation has deeply affected him psychologically over the years.
Personality
[edit]Unlike many ideological villains, Reaktor began as an earnest patriot who sincerely believed he was defending humanity through service to the Soviet state. Though hardened by years of Cold War conflict, he often retained traces of dignity, discipline, and melancholy absent in more openly malicious supervillains.
Pavel understands better than most what his powers cost him.
He cannot safely live among ordinary people.
Cannot touch others freely.
Cannot truly remove the armor.
Over time, the collapse of the Soviet Union and shifting global politics left Reaktor increasingly isolated and uncertain regarding his purpose. Yet fragments of the old loyalty remain.
He still thinks like a soldier.
Even if the war he fought no longer exists.
Legacy
[edit]Reaktor became one of the defining Soviet supervillains of the Silver Age and a recurring adversary of Western heroes including the Unity League. His stories blended Cold War politics, atomic-age anxieties, tragic supersoldier themes, and radioactive super-science into a classic “living reactor” archetype.
Because Pavel Zolotov volunteered to become a weapon for his country.
And discovered too late...
that some weapons can never truly be put away.
