Red Wraith is the alias of Vasily Sterankov, a Cold War superspy transformed by catastrophic Soviet radiation experiments into a ghostlike superhuman capable of passing through solid matter. Once a timid and emotionally fragile bureaucrat, Sterankov emerged from the experiments profoundly altered — physically intangible, emotionally hollow, and perfectly suited for espionage and assassination on behalf of the Soviet state.
For decades, Red Wraith became one of the most elusive and terrifying operatives of the Cold War, battling heroes such as the Crusaders, Dr. Saturn, Atomboy, and the Unity League.
He rarely raised his voice.
He rarely needed to.
Early Life
Before his transformation, Vasily Sterankov was an unremarkable Soviet bureaucrat — quiet, obedient, cautious, and politically invisible. He possessed no notable ambition beyond survival within the vast machinery of the Soviet system.
Unfortunately, survival within that system often depended less on innocence than on political convenience.
Sterankov was eventually accused of unspecified crimes against the state during one of the Soviet Union’s many internal purges. Facing either execution or a life sentence within the gulag system, Vasily was offered another option: volunteer for classified scientific experimentation.
He accepted immediately.
The Experiments
The secret Soviet program involved dangerous radiation exposure and dimensional-energy research intended to create superhuman operatives for intelligence and military purposes.
Every prior test subject had died horribly.
Vasily died too.
Doctors pronounced him clinically dead following the procedure.
