“No soul passes the Gate uncounted.”
— Gorm the Guardian
Gorm the Guardian is a terrifying infernal sentinel associated with ancient occult gateways, forbidden summoning rites, and extradimensional prisons. Towering, silent, and draped in a vast crimson mantle fastened by an immense rune-carved medallion, Gorm appears less like a demon and more like a cosmic official carrying out eternal duties older than humanity itself.
Occult scholars disagree whether Gorm is truly evil. What they do agree upon is this:
Where Gorm appears, something sealed is about to open.
Nature
According to forbidden grimoires dating back to prehuman civilizations, Gorm is one of the Wardens of the Threshold — powerful infernal entities tasked with guarding the boundaries between dimensions, hell-realms, prison realities, and forbidden regions of existence.
Unlike lesser demons, Gorm does not tempt mortals, bargain for souls, or spread chaos for pleasure. He exists to enforce ancient laws that humanity was never meant to understand.
To Gorm, worlds, species, and civilizations are temporary things.
Doors are eternal.
Appearance
Gorm resembles a massive humanoid figure cloaked almost entirely in layered crimson robes that move unnaturally even in still air. His face is concealed behind a black mask-like void marked by pale horned eye-shapes that glow faintly in darkness.
At the center of his cloak rests a circular seal or medallion believed to represent the authority of the Wardens. Occult researchers claim the sigil changes subtly when observed directly.
Witnesses often report impossible sensory distortions near Gorm:
- Sounds becoming muffled
- Shadows stretching unnaturally
- Feelings of pressure or vertigo
- Sudden nosebleeds
- Clocks stopping or slowing
Animals react to him with panic and aggression.
History
The first confirmed modern appearance of Gorm occurred during the infamous Black Choir Incident in New York, when a cult attempted to open a stable gateway into what they believed was a dimension of unlimited mystical power.
Instead, Gorm emerged.
The cultists reportedly fell silent upon seeing him. Survivors later described the entity walking calmly through gunfire and magical attacks alike before sealing the gateway permanently and dragging several cult leaders screaming into the darkness beyond the portal.
Shadow first encountered Gorm while investigating the aftermath of the incident. Though the two have clashed several times since, Shadow eventually came to suspect that Gorm was not attempting to conquer Earth at all.
He was policing it.
Powers
Gorm possesses vast infernal and extradimensional abilities.
- Superhuman strength and durability
- Mystical energy projection
- Dimensional sealing and opening
- Teleportation through gateways
- Immunity to conventional weapons
- Fear and paralysis induction
- Supernatural perception
- Command over lesser infernal entities
- Reality distortion near portals or thresholds
Gorm appears especially powerful near gateways, summoning circles, dimensional tears, and occult nexuses.
The Iron Threshold
Ancient occult traditions refer repeatedly to a place called the Iron Threshold — a colossal metaphysical boundary separating countless dimensions and realities.
Many scholars believe Gorm serves there directly.
Some texts imply there are other Wardens besides him.
Most occultists desperately hope this is untrue.
Personality
Gorm is cold, patient, and eerily formal. He speaks rarely, but when he does, his voice resembles multiple layered voices echoing simultaneously.
Unlike many infernal beings, Gorm displays little cruelty or sadism. He does not kill casually, nor does he appear motivated by conquest or destruction.
Instead, he behaves like an immortal official carrying out ancient responsibilities with absolute certainty and total indifference to mortal suffering.
To Gorm, humanity resembles children playing beside locked doors they were warned never to open.
Enemies
Though not openly hostile to Earth itself, Gorm frequently clashes with heroes and occultists attempting to interfere with supernatural events.
Among those who have battled or encountered him are Shadow, Doctor Arcane, Magus, and paranormal containment teams from PHASE II.
He is especially hostile toward cults, dimensional invaders, and reckless sorcerers.
Legacy
Gorm the Guardian remains one of the most mysterious infernal entities in the Crucible Universe. Unlike traditional demons, he represents something colder and more unsettling than simple evil:
Law.
Not human law.
Something older.
Something cosmic.
