“Every weapon is just a conversation waiting to reverse direction.”
— Reflec

Reflec is the codename of Grote de Graff, a cybernetically enhanced technopath and defensive combat specialist capable of reflecting, redirecting, absorbing, or deflecting nearly any form of attack. Originally a flashy high-tech criminal of the late Modern Age, Reflec evolved into one of the most dangerous urban cyber-villains in the Crucible Universe after extensive illegal augmentation transformed his nervous system into a living tactical response engine.

Known for his glowing magenta visor, black polymer body-suit, and unnervingly calm demeanor under fire, Reflec has become a recurring enemy of both the Guardians and the younger hero Mistral.

Background

Grote de Graff was once a celebrated systems engineer and combat-interface designer working for defense contractors connected to PHASE II and several major technology corporations in Unity City. Brilliant, arrogant, and obsessed with predictive combat systems, Voss became convinced that traditional armor was obsolete.

To de Graff, the future of combat was not surviving attacks.

It was redirecting them.

Over years of increasingly illegal experimentation, de Graff developed advanced reactive combat interfaces capable of analyzing incoming force vectors and responding faster than ordinary human reflexes. When his employers rejected his more extreme cybernetic proposals as unsafe, de Graff vanished with prototype technology and resurfaced months later as Reflec.

His first public appearance involved the robbery of an experimental research facility in broad daylight while under attack from security forces. Witnesses reported bullets curving away from him, energy blasts rebounding unpredictably, and attackers somehow striking each other instead of their target.

The footage made Reflec instantly infamous.

Powers and Abilities

Reflec’s cybernetic systems constantly analyze nearby threats and automatically respond to incoming attacks.

His capabilities include:

  • Reflection of directed energy attacks
  • Deflection of bullets and projectiles
  • Redirection of force vectors
  • Electromagnetic interference fields
  • Predictive combat analysis
  • Tactical reflex enhancement
  • Limited energy absorption
  • Holographic misdirection systems

Reflec’s signature visor contains a massively overclocked tactical processor capable of mapping battlefield trajectories in real time. Against inexperienced opponents, fighting him can feel almost impossible, as attacks seem to rebound unpredictably or miss entirely.

His systems are especially effective against ranged combatants and energy-based heroes.

Cybernetic Augmentation

Over the years, Reflec progressively replaced large portions of his nervous system with experimental cybernetic architecture. His reflexes now operate partially independent of conscious thought, allowing him to react at near-superhuman speeds.

However, these modifications came at severe psychological cost.

Reflec increasingly perceives ordinary humans as unbearably slow and mentally primitive. Conversations frustrate him. Crowds irritate him. Prolonged inactivity reportedly causes him anxiety and dissociation.

Several former associates claim Voss no longer sleeps normally and spends hours motionless while his systems continuously simulate combat scenarios.

The Guardians

Reflec first rose to prominence as an adversary of the Guardians, whose more technologically oriented members found his abilities particularly dangerous. His repeated attacks on research laboratories, cybernetics firms, and advanced weapons facilities brought him into direct conflict with the team multiple times.

Though never a world-conquering threat, Reflec became notorious as one of the most difficult urban combatants in the superhero community because conventional tactics simply failed against him.

Entire Guardian strike teams were occasionally forced to improvise absurd solutions just to bypass his defensive systems.

Rivalry with Mistral

In recent years Reflec has developed a particularly intense rivalry with Mistral.

Unlike many heroes, Mistral’s wind manipulation produces chaotic and difficult-to-predict attack patterns that partially bypass Reflec’s otherwise precise tactical calculations. Their confrontations often become high-speed running battles across rooftops, highways, or aerial transit systems throughout Unity City.

Reflec regards Mistral with a mixture of fascination and irritation, viewing her as one of the few opponents capable of disrupting his perfect predictive models.

Mistral, meanwhile, considers him “an overclocked narcissist with laser glasses.”

Personality

Reflec is intelligent, cold, sarcastic, and deeply self-assured. Unlike theatrical supervillains obsessed with domination, he approaches crime almost academically, treating combat encounters as opportunities to test and refine his systems.

He rarely raises his voice and often speaks to opponents as though correcting technical mistakes.

Despite his arrogance, Reflec avoids unnecessary killing whenever possible. To him, death represents wasted data.

Legacy

Reflec became one of the defining cyberpunk-style villains of the later Modern Age and helped establish Unity City’s reputation as a center for dangerous human-machine experimentation.

Among younger heroes, he has earned a particularly frustrating reputation:

The man who turns your own attacks against you.
