The Black Eagle was the Golden Age identity of Dane Holmes, heir to a secret family tradition that reached back to Colonial America. To the public, Holmes appeared to be another reckless young playboy from a wealthy and disreputable family. In truth, he became the latest bearer of a mantle that had passed quietly from eldest son to eldest son for generations, rising whenever injustice required an unseen avenger.
Background
[edit]The Holmes family had long cultivated a reputation for indolence, scandal, and aristocratic uselessness, but that public image concealed one of the oldest heroic traditions in America. Since before the days of Paul Revere, the eldest son of the Holmes line had carried on the identity of the Black Eagle, a costumed defender who operated in periods of danger and vanished again when peace made him unnecessary.
For much of Dane Holmes’ early life, the mantle belonged to his older brother Nick, who answered the call when Nazi aggression began to threaten the world. Nick donned the traditional garb and weapons of the Black Eagle and entered the fight as his ancestors had done before him.
His career was brief but consequential. During a battle with the Saboteur, Nick was mortally wounded and died in Dane’s arms, passing on both the family secret and the responsibility that came with it.
Becoming The Black Eagle
[edit]Dane had not been prepared for the role. Until Nick’s death, he had lived up to the Holmes reputation too well, embracing the life of a charming wastrel with little concern for duty. The loss of his brother changed him, forcing him to confront the hidden purpose behind his family’s long masquerade.
Sworn to continue the tradition, Dane submitted himself to the teachers and retainers who had served the Holmes family for generations. Under their guidance, he learned archery, acrobatics, stealth, and the particular methods associated with the Black Eagle identity. When his training was complete, he took up the same weapons his brother had carried, still marked by the cost of the duty he had inherited.
The Victory Squadron
[edit]As the Black Eagle, Dane joined the Victory Squadron, bringing an older and more secretive tradition of heroism into the organized super-team era. Within the Squadron, he served as a precision fighter and agile field operative, well suited to missions requiring mobility, stealth, and carefully applied force.
His presence also connected the wartime heroes to a deeper American heroic lineage, suggesting that the Golden Age did not emerge from nothing, but from older patterns that had simply taken on brighter costumes and larger stages.
