Detroit Iron

Detroit Iron is the public identity of Phillip “Detroit Phil” Bascomb, a super-strong brawler whose accidental transformation into a powerhouse led not to traditional heroism, but to a career built on spectacle, publicity, and profit.

While he has fought crime—and occasionally still does—Bascomb is as much a personality as a hero, blurring the line between protector and performer.

Origin

[edit]

Phillip Bascomb was an auto worker in Detroit whose life changed when he was accidentally exposed to an experimental energized chemical formula. The substance altered his physiology dramatically, granting him immense strength and durability.

His first act with these new abilities was genuinely heroic. When an assembly-line robot went berserk, Bascomb intervened, using his newfound strength to protect his coworkers and prevent serious casualties.

The company rewarded him modestly.

Bascomb realized he could do better.

The Rise Of “Big D”

[edit]

Seeing opportunity where others might have seen responsibility, Bascomb reinvented himself as Detroit Iron and stepped into the public eye. Rather than operate quietly, he embraced visibility, turning his powers into a brand.

For a time, he fought crime, but always with an eye toward exposure. That exposure grew into a cable reality show, Big D, which followed his exploits and amplified his persona. The show brought him a degree of fame and financial success, supplemented by endorsements and promotional appearances.

He even staged pay-per-view challenges, inviting other heroes to compete against him in feats of strength. Only Kodiak accepted—and defeated him decisively, in an event that was quietly shelved.

Entourage

[edit]

Detroit Iron rarely operates alone, preferring the company of a small but loyal entourage.

  • Lola Blatz – His cousin and agent, who manages his business interests
  • Vincent “Mega-Taco” Raines – Self-appointed sidekick, notable primarily for enthusiasm and a persistent noisemaker

Their role is as much performance support as logistical assistance, reinforcing Bascomb’s public image while benefiting from his success.

Powers

[edit]

Detroit Iron’s abilities are straightforward but formidable.

  • Superhuman Strength – Capable of lifting and striking with tremendous force
  • Superhuman Durability – Highly resistant to injury and physical damage

His raw power places him among the stronger non-cosmic heroes.

Skills

[edit]

Bascomb’s background provides a limited but practical skillset.

  • Competent driver
  • Skilled welder
  • Familiarity with industrial environments

His effectiveness relies far more on strength than technique.

Personality

[edit]

Detroit Iron is loud, confident, and unapologetically self-promoting. He enjoys attention and measures success in visibility as much as impact. At the same time, there are moments—often brief—when his original instincts resurface, reminding observers that his first act as a superhuman was to save lives.

Whether those instincts will define him again remains uncertain.

Reputation

[edit]

Among the public, Detroit Iron is a recognizable figure, part celebrity and part hero. Among other superheroes, his reputation is mixed. Some view him as a distraction or opportunist, while others acknowledge that, when he chooses to act, his power can make a difference.

He is taken seriously when he needs to be.

Not always when he wants to be.

Legacy

[edit]

Detroit Iron represents a modern evolution of heroism, where power, media, and personality intersect. His story raises questions about what it means to be a hero in an age where attention can be as valuable as action.

For now, he continues to perform, to promote, and occasionally to protect.

What he ultimately becomes may depend on which of those he decides matters most.
