Diablo is the criminal identity of Hector Sanchez, a disgraced kickboxing champion whose use of illegal performance enhancers permanently transformed his body and destroyed his professional career. Reinventing himself as a superhuman enforcer and mercenary, Diablo became a recurring enemy of street-level heroes and later an operative for organized crime and terrorism.
Background
[edit]Hector Sanchez was once one of the rising stars of professional kickboxing, known for his explosive speed, aggressive fighting style, and crowd-pleasing charisma. For a time, he seemed poised to become a major sports celebrity.
But Sanchez feared losing what fame he had achieved.
As younger fighters entered the sport and his body began showing signs of accumulated punishment, he turned to increasingly dangerous performance-enhancing drugs in an effort to maintain his edge. Eventually, he began using experimental illegal steroids obtained through criminal connections.
The drugs worked.
Too well.
Transformation And Disgrace
[edit]Sanchez’s physical capabilities increased dramatically, granting him enhanced strength, reflexes, endurance, and recovery speed beyond normal human limits. Unfortunately for him, the substances were eventually discovered, and the resulting scandal destroyed his reputation almost overnight.
He was stripped of titles, banned from competition, and publicly disgraced.
Worse still, the effects of the experimental compounds proved permanent. Sanchez’s body had fundamentally changed, leaving him stronger and faster than before but unable to return to any semblance of ordinary life.
Embittered and desperate for money, he drifted into organized crime.
Criminal Career
[edit]Under the identity of Diablo, Sanchez became an enforcer for the crime boss Violetta Loveless, using his enhanced physical abilities to intimidate rivals and eliminate problems. His violent methods and combat skill soon brought him into repeated conflict with heroes such as the Outcasts and Avenger.
Unlike many costumed criminals, Diablo rarely bothered with elaborate schemes or ideological motives. He understood violence, and violence paid well.
Over time, his reputation as a capable and ruthless combat operative eventually attracted the attention of HAVOC, which recruited him for a variety of terrorist and destabilization operations.
Legal Status
[edit]Diablo is officially considered a fugitive from justice and is supposed to be serving a life sentence for murder. Like many dangerous super-criminals, however, incarceration proved temporary.
Authorities continue to regard him as highly dangerous and prone to extreme violence.

He tends to live impulsively, driven by ego, anger, and a desire to prove he is still dangerous and relevant. Beneath the swagger and aggression lies a man who never truly accepted the collapse of the life he thought he deserved.
Legacy
[edit]Diablo became one of the recognizable street-level superhuman enforcers of the modern era, a villain who blurred the line between athlete, celebrity, criminal, and hired muscle.
He once fought for championships.
Now he fights for whoever writes the check.
