Doom was the terrifying criminal identity of Vernon Hargrave, once one of the great industrial magnates of the post-World War I era before financial collapse, betrayal, and madness transformed him into one of the most feared supervillains of the Golden Age. Clad in armored battle gear and armed with devastating chemical and explosive weapons, Doom waged a personal war against the political and economic order he believed had destroyed him.
He became one of the greatest enemies of the Victory Squadron and one of the defining terror figures of the Golden Age.
Rise Of Vernon Hargrave
[edit]In the years following World War I, Vernon Hargrave stood among the most celebrated industrialists in America. Newspapers called him the Titan of Progress, praising the vast manufacturing empire that produced automobiles, industrial machinery, experimental technologies, and countless modern conveniences during the booming prosperity of the era.
Hargrave represented the promise of modern industry itself.
Brilliant, charismatic, and ruthlessly ambitious, he believed technology and industry could reshape civilization for the better. His factories expanded relentlessly, his fortune grew immense, and politicians eagerly sought his support.
Then came the Great Depression.
Collapse
[edit]The financial collapse destroyed Hargrave’s empire almost overnight. Contracts vanished, banks failed, workers rioted, and entire factories shut down. Watching everything he had built crumble around him shattered Hargrave psychologically as much as financially.
Desperate to rebuild his fortune and regain influence, Hargrave invested heavily in experimental weapons technologies, believing military contracts and advanced defense systems would restore his position.
Instead, the government confiscated many of his inventions, declaring them too unstable and dangerous for deployment.
To Hargrave, it was betrayal.
The nation he believed he had helped build had discarded him.
Birth Of Doom
[edit]Shortly afterward, Hargrave’s final factory exploded under mysterious circumstances. Vernon Hargrave was presumed dead.
He was not.
The explosion left him horribly scarred both physically and mentally, but he survived amid the ruins of his industrial empire. Emerging from hiding clad in a terrifying armored suit equipped with his deadliest inventions, Hargrave abandoned his former identity and became Doom.
No longer interested in saving society, Doom dedicated himself to punishing it.
Reign Of Terror
[edit]Doom launched a campaign of bombings, assassinations, chemical attacks, and industrial sabotage that terrorized the nation throughout the Golden Age. Politicians, financiers, rival industrialists, and government officials all became targets of his wrath.
Unlike many flamboyant criminals, Doom projected an aura of grim inevitability. His attacks often struck without warning, shrouding entire city blocks in smoke, madness-inducing chemicals, or lethal toxins before vanishing into chaos.
His most feared weapon was his infamous anthrotoxin gas, a horrific chemical agent capable of mass casualties on an industrial scale.
The rise of the Victory Squadron finally gave the world champions capable of opposing him directly. Doom battled the team repeatedly, becoming one of their most dangerous recurring enemies during the Golden Age.

Unlike many villains motivated by greed alone, Doom wanted civilization itself to suffer. Every bombing and chemical attack represented, in his mind, proof that the modern industrial order was corrupt, cowardly, and doomed to destroy itself.
He simply intended to accelerate the process.
Legacy
[edit]Doom became one of the defining terror villains of the Golden Age, embodying the fears of industrial collapse, chemical warfare, political corruption, and technological destruction that haunted the years between the World Wars.
Where other villains sought riches or conquest, Doom offered something colder:
the belief that civilization itself deserved to burn.
