Elysium Electronics is a small electronics sales and repair shop in Red Hook, Brooklyn, owned and operated by Cyrus Kempf. To most of the neighborhood, it is a useful local business: the sort of place where an old radio, busted amplifier, vintage television, police scanner, or temperamental piece of stereo equipment might be coaxed back to life by a patient man with a soldering iron and a story for every occasion.
To a much smaller circle, Elysium Electronics is also one of the quiet support points for Manhunter and the Night Shift. The shop is not Manhunter’s actual headquarters, but it serves as the public-facing mask over a much stranger and more dangerous world concealed beneath the streets of Brooklyn.
The Shop
[edit]Elysium Electronics sits on a worn Red Hook street among brick storefronts, old industrial buildings, corner groceries, garages, and apartments whose residents have learned to mistrust anything too polished. The shop’s sign is bright enough to be cheerful but old enough to feel permanent. Its front windows are crowded with repaired radios, secondhand speakers, antique microphones, surplus circuit boards, used televisions, replacement parts, and hand-lettered signs promising repairs that most modern retailers would rather not attempt.
Inside, the place smells faintly of dust, warm plastic, coffee, and old wiring. Shelves are stacked high with cables, tubes, adapters, solder, fuses, dials, vacuum tubes, circuit boards, phone chargers, and pieces of equipment whose original purpose has long since become a subject of debate. There is usually music playing somewhere in the shop, often something from the 1960s or 1970s, and just as often interrupted by the crackle of a scanner or the buzz of an open chassis on the workbench.
The business is real. People bring things to Elysium because Cyrus can fix them. He repairs what he can, explains what he cannot, charges less than he probably should, and has been known to accept payment in food, favors, old records, or “pay me when you’re back on your feet.”
Cyrus Kempf
[edit]Cyrus Kempf is a retired military man, though few casual customers would guess it from his manner. In public, he is known as a mellow, long-haired, modern-day hippie with a soldier’s posture, a mechanic’s hands, and an old neighborhood habit of knowing everyone’s business without seeming nosy about it.
Cyrus is a familiar figure in Red Hook. He knows which kids are skipping school, which landlords are squeezing tenants, which old-timers need someone to check on them during a heat wave, and which new faces are asking too many questions. He is friendly, eccentric, generous, and far more observant than he lets on.
For the neighborhood, Elysium Electronics is a little civic institution. People come in to buy batteries, get a cracked radio fixed, use the phone, ask after a missing relative, complain about the city, or listen to Cyrus talk about music, war, meditation, bad wiring, and the moral collapse of disposable consumer electronics.
A Front For The Night Shift
[edit]In secret, Elysium Electronics serves as a front and access point for the operations of Manhunter and the Night Shift. The shop provides cover, communications, storage, and a plausible reason for Cyrus to receive unusual visitors at odd hours.
The repair benches and back rooms contain ordinary tools, but also modified scanners, encrypted communications gear, surveillance monitors, signal intercept equipment, and components that are not sold to walk-in customers. A visitor might see a cluttered repair shop. A trained operative might notice the reinforced rear door, the security mirrors placed at odd angles, the antenna array disguised among rooftop junk, or the fact that Cyrus seems to know about police activity before the evening news does.
Elysium is useful precisely because it is not flashy. It is not a gleaming superhero base, a federal installation, or a fortified tower. It is a neighborhood shop with a noisy fan, a bad floorboard, and a man behind the counter who looks like he would rather discuss vinyl records than urban warfare.
The Hidden Access
[edit]Manhunter's secret lair is concealed beneath the street, accessible through hidden routes known only to Cyrus and a trusted few. The lair itself is a separate facility and has its own entry, but Elysium Electronics provides one of its most important surface connections.
The shop’s hidden access is protected by mundane and electronic safeguards rather than obvious super-science. False shelving, concealed locks, old service passages, maintenance tunnels, and disguised security systems all help preserve the illusion that Elysium is merely an eccentric repair shop. The goal is not to impress intruders. The goal is to make sure they never know where to look.
Because the lair lies below the street rather than directly “in the basement” in any simple sense, searches of the shop rarely reveal anything useful. Even those who suspect Cyrus of hiding something often underestimate the scale of what is beneath them.
Neighborhood Cover
[edit]Elysium’s best defense is Red Hook itself. Cyrus is liked, trusted, and protected by the neighborhood in the informal ways that matter most. People notice when strangers watch the shop. They remember license plates. They mention odd questions. They forget things when the wrong people ask.
This local loyalty does not come from fear or secret manipulation. Cyrus earned it. He fixes radios, helps veterans, watches out for kids, gives people credit, and treats the neighborhood as something worth defending. In return, Red Hook gives him camouflage that no government agency could manufacture.
This makes Elysium Electronics especially valuable to Night Shift. The shop sits at the boundary between street-level life and hidden war. It is close enough to ordinary people to hear rumors before they become cases, and hidden enough to support operations that cannot be run through official channels.
Role In Night Shift Operations
[edit]For the Night Shift, Elysium Electronics functions as a safe contact point, informal listening post, gear stop, and emergency fallback location. Members may pass through to receive messages, borrow equipment, check police-band chatter, repair damaged electronics, or meet Cyrus away from more obvious surveillance.
It is also a place where the team’s street-level nature is most visible. The fight is not only in laboratories, lairs, rooftops, and occult dens. It is in neighborhoods where people disappear, landlords hire thugs, gangs move weapons, monsters hide in plain sight, and the authorities arrive too late or not at all. Elysium keeps one foot in that world and one foot in the secret one below.
Reputation
[edit]Publicly, Elysium Electronics is a cluttered, beloved repair shop run by an aging eccentric who knows more about obsolete hardware than anyone has a right to know. Locally, it is the sort of place people trust because it has survived long enough to become part of the landscape.
Secretly, it is one of the quiet nerve endings of Manhunter’s war on crime. It is not the base itself, not the arsenal, and not the legend. It is the storefront, the mask, the neighborhood doorbell, and the place where a broken radio might sit on the same counter as a coded message that could save a life before dawn.
