Firebird is the mercenary identity of Jean Weatheral, a disgraced Australian astronaut and aerospace engineer who stole an experimental solar exploration suit and transformed it into one of the most dangerous armored flight systems on Earth. Fast, heavily armed, and extraordinarily difficult to contain, Firebird became a recurring enemy of the Gauntlet and one of the premier high-speed mercenary operatives of the modern age.
Background
[edit]Jean Weatheral was once considered one of the most promising astronauts and aerospace specialists of her generation. Born in Australia and trained in advanced atmospheric flight and deep-space operations, Weatheral built a reputation for fearlessness, technical brilliance, and an almost reckless willingness to push experimental systems beyond their intended limits.
That same recklessness eventually destroyed her legitimate career.
After a disastrous mission and a series of escalating disciplinary incidents, Weatheral found herself increasingly isolated from the international aerospace community. Bitter at what she regarded as cowardice and bureaucratic mediocrity, she became obsessed with proving that humanity’s future belonged to individuals willing to take risks others feared.
Her opportunity arrived through an experimental solar exploration project.
The Firebird Suit
[edit]The prototype exploration armor was designed to survive temperatures, pressures, and radiation levels far beyond anything encountered on Earth, allowing researchers to conduct missions close to the Sun and within hostile stellar environments. Weatheral immediately recognized the suit’s military and criminal potential.
Rather than merely stealing the armor, she rebuilt it.
Adding advanced weapons systems, combat shielding, and enhanced maneuvering technology, Weatheral transformed the exploration platform into a heavily armed supersonic battlesuit. She also modified the control systems so the armor would respond exclusively to her own neural patterns, making it nearly impossible for others to operate or duplicate successfully.
Adopting the name Firebird, she entered the global underworld as a high-priced mercenary, saboteur, and aerial combat specialist.
Career As A Mercenary
[edit]Firebird quickly earned a reputation for speed, professionalism, and extreme survivability. She specialized in high-risk operations involving theft, sabotage, extraction missions, and direct assaults where conventional forces could not respond quickly enough.
Her repeated clashes with the Gauntlet became especially infamous. Though captured several times, Weatheral consistently escaped confinement and either recovered or rebuilt the Firebird armor, often returning more dangerous than before.
Unlike many armored villains driven by ideology or conquest, Firebird is primarily motivated by independence, thrill-seeking, and professional pride. She views herself less as a criminal than as a pilot operating beyond the limitations imposed by governments and institutions.

Unlike many villains, Weatheral rarely acts out of hatred or cruelty. She genuinely loves flying, exploration, and testing the limits of what technology and human skill can achieve. Unfortunately, she also possesses very little regard for laws, collateral damage, or the consequences of her actions.
To Weatheral, the sensation of flight at the edge of catastrophe is worth almost any risk.
Legacy
[edit]Firebird became one of the defining armored mercenaries of the modern heroic age, feared not only for her advanced technology but for her refusal to stay defeated. Every capture, crash, or apparent loss merely became another engineering problem for her to solve.
Some villains seek power. Some seek wealth.
