The Griffin

The Griffin is the codename of Griff Thompson, a Silver Age superspy turned superhero whose career spans decades—and a gap in time itself. Originally operating as a flamboyant field agent for PHASE II under the codename The Griffin, Thompson combined espionage, showmanship, and raw physical ability into one of the most distinctive heroic personas of his era.

Background

[edit]

Griff Thompson rose to prominence during the Silver Age as an operative of PHASE II, the United Nations’ global intelligence and security organization. In an era defined by bold aesthetics and even bolder personalities, Thompson stood out as one of the agency’s most unconventional agents.

Operating under the codename The Griffin, he embraced a style of espionage that was as flamboyant as it was effective—high-risk infiltrations, globe-spanning missions, and confrontations staged as much for spectacle as for success. His operations often carried a surreal, almost dreamlike quality, reflecting the experimental tone of the time.

For a period, he partnered with fellow PHASE II agent the Pearl, forming one of the most visually striking and unpredictable duos in the field.

Career

[edit]

The Griffin’s missions took him across the world, battling criminal masterminds, rogue states, and costumed threats with equal flair. His combination of agility, reflexes, and sheer bravado made him a natural for both espionage and open conflict.

His career came to an abrupt halt during a confrontation with the villain Megadeath. In the course of their battle, both vanished and were presumed dead.

In reality, the two had fallen into a cryonic freezing system, preserving them in suspended animation for decades.

They were eventually discovered and revived by Watchstar West. Awakening in the modern era, Thompson faced a world far removed from the one he had known—more complex, more restrained, and less forgiving of his brand of theatrical heroics.

Rather than fade into obscurity, he adapted. Griffin joined the team that would become Knight/Watch, bringing his Silver Age sensibilities into the modern heroic landscape.

Powers

[edit]

Griffin possesses an energized physiology that enhances his physical capabilities.

  • Superhuman reflexes allowing near-instantaneous reaction
  • Exceptional agility and coordination
  • Heightened responsiveness in combat situations

These abilities make him especially dangerous in fast-moving, close-range encounters.

Skills

[edit]

Griff Thompson is both a trained agent and seasoned combatant.

  • Expert in espionage, infiltration, and covert operations
  • Highly skilled hand-to-hand combatant
  • Experienced in high-risk, unconventional mission environments
  • Natural showman, capable of using presence and misdirection to advantage

Technology

[edit]

During his PHASE II career, Griffin made use of specialized equipment.

  • Vibro-gloves capable of delivering devastating close-combat strikes
  • Reinforced tactical gear designed for mobility and survival
  • A variety of spy gadgets tailored to infiltration and deception

While he relies less on such tools in the modern era, he remains proficient in their use.

Personality

[edit]

Griffin is unapologetically a man out of time. He retains the boldness, swagger, and theatrical flair of the Silver Age, approaching danger with confidence and style.

Where modern heroes may be cautious or restrained, Griffin is direct, expressive, and often larger-than-life. Beneath this exterior, however, lies a professional operative shaped by years of high-stakes missions and sudden, disorienting displacement into the future.

He refuses to let the world leave him behind.

Reputation

[edit]

To PHASE II veterans and historians, Griffin is a legend of a wilder, more experimental era of espionage.

To modern heroes, he is both an asset and an anomaly—a hero whose instincts are sharp, but whose methods can be unpredictable.

To his enemies, he is fast, fearless, and impossible to ignore.

Legacy

[edit]

Griffin represents a bridge between eras: the exuberant, stylized heroics of the Silver Age and the more grounded realities of the modern world.

Though time itself removed him from the stage, he returned unchanged in spirit. His continued presence serves as a reminder that heroism is not defined by the era, but by the individual.

And Griff Thompson has never been anything less than unforgettable.

Notes

[edit]
  • The codename “Griffin” originated as a PHASE II designation during his espionage career in the 1960s.
  • This character predates a similarly named movie character by at least four years.
