The Harlequin

The Harlequin is the manic criminal identity of Gorshin McLown, a failed entertainer and small-time nobody whose descent into clown-themed villainy transformed him into one of the most flamboyant and unpredictable enemies of the Unity League. Combining theatrical insanity, elaborate death-traps, acrobatic gimmick weapons, and a desperate need for recognition, the Harlequin became a defining Silver Age menace and later a founding member of the Marauders alongside Mesmerio.

Unlike cold masterminds or grim killers, the Harlequin treats crime as performance.

Every robbery is a routine.

Every battle is a stage show.

And every terrified victim is part of the audience.

Gorshin McLown

[edit]

Before becoming the Harlequin, Gorshin McLown drifted through life as a chronically unsuccessful dreamer.

He failed at business.

Failed at music.

Failed at family life.

Failed at almost everything he attempted.

Nervous, eager to please, and painfully insecure, McLown spent years chasing success that always seemed just out of reach. The one thing he could reliably do was make people laugh — though often unintentionally, and usually at his own expense.

That laughter cut deeper than most people realized.

Beneath the timid exterior, resentment accumulated slowly over years of humiliation and disappointment.

Then someone finally handed him a mask.

The First Crime

[edit]

McLown’s transformation began when enforcers from the Drago crime family forced him into participating in a criminal operation. Terrified of being recognized, Gorshin disguised himself using cheap white-face clown makeup.

Something changed the moment he put it on.

The makeup gave him permission to stop being Gorshin McLown.

No more embarrassment.

No more weakness.

No more apologizing.

During the robbery, witnesses described him as energetic, hysterically funny, and frighteningly unstable — seemingly intoxicated by the reactions he provoked. For the first time in his life, people were not laughing at him.

They were afraid of him.

He liked that much better.

Becoming The Harlequin

[edit]

Abandoning his old identity almost immediately, McLown reinvented himself as the Harlequin, a flamboyant criminal clown obsessed with theatrical crime, elaborate traps, gimmick weaponry, and psychological humiliation.

Over time, the Harlequin persona completely consumed whatever remained of timid old Gorshin McLown. He began wearing clown makeup constantly, speaking in rapid-fire manic bursts, and treating criminal acts like vaudeville performances spiraling violently out of control.

The transformation was so complete that many heroes privately wondered whether the Harlequin persona represented madness...

or liberation.

Enemy Of The Unity League

[edit]

The Harlequin quickly became one of the most persistent recurring threats faced by the Unity League during the Silver Age.

Unlike physically powerful villains, McLown relied on chaos, unpredictability, gadgetry, and psychological manipulation. He delighted in constructing oversized traps, humiliating authority figures, and turning ordinary urban spaces into absurd deathtraps filled with exploding props and booby-trapped practical jokes.

His crimes often appeared ridiculous at first glance.

Then people started dying.

Even experienced heroes found the Harlequin exhausting because he never stopped performing. He cackled, taunted, danced, sang, improvised, and hurled insults constantly, often while springing increasingly dangerous traps with childlike delight.

Fighting him felt less like battling a criminal mastermind than surviving a nervous breakdown with explosives attached.

The Marauders

[edit]

Recognizing the Harlequin’s ability to spread panic and confusion, Mesmerio recruited him as one of the founding members of the Marauders.

Within the team, McLown functioned simultaneously as saboteur, distraction, morale destroyer, and chaotic wildcard. Though many teammates found him irritating or exhausting, Mesmerio understood that beneath the clowning lurked a genuinely dangerous tactical mind.

The Harlequin himself adored the attention.

Finally, he had an audience worthy of him.

Skills

[edit]

Though entirely non-superhuman, the Harlequin is a remarkably inventive and dangerous criminal engineer.

His expertise includes:

  • Trap design
  • Improvised weapons engineering
  • Acrobatics
  • Escape artistry
  • Stage illusion
  • Mechanical gadgetry
  • Psychological intimidation

His greatest strength is unpredictability. The Harlequin rarely approaches a fight directly when he can turn it into spectacle instead.

Weapons And Gadgets

[edit]

The Harlequin maintains an arsenal of bizarre clown-themed weapons and devices, including:

  • Exploding juggling balls
  • Trick firearms
  • Spring-loaded jumping boots
  • Razor-edged playing cards
  • Rubberized impact-resistant costumes
  • Electrified props
  • Compressed-gas gag devices

Much of his technology appears ridiculous until used lethally.

Which is exactly how he likes it.

Personality

[edit]

The Harlequin is manic, theatrical, emotionally volatile, and desperately hungry for attention. His personality swings rapidly between gleeful comedy, wounded self-pity, hysterical rage, and frightening sadism.

At his core, Gorshin McLown remains a deeply insecure man terrified of being ignored or laughed at dismissively ever again.

So he forces the world to pay attention.

Constantly.

He performs even in combat because silence terrifies him. The Harlequin needs reaction the way other people need oxygen.

Whether fear.

Laughter.

Or screaming.

Any audience will do.

Legacy

[edit]

The Harlequin became one of the classic manic clown-villains of the Silver Age, blending theatrical absurdity, psychological instability, vaudeville gadgetry, and tragic insecurity into a recurring Unity League menace.

Because Gorshin McLown spent his entire life being laughed at.

Then discovered that terror gets a much better reaction.
