“I don’t believe in the supernatural. I just bill it by the hour.”
Hex

Hex is a supernatural private investigator operating out of Los Angeles, a man—or something like a man—whose knowledge of magic, demons, and the unseen world makes him one of the most dangerous occult operatives on the West Coast. Though he presents himself as a hardboiled detective, his past and true nature remain shrouded in mystery.

Theme
Hex on the Highway

Background

[edit]

Hex first came to wider attention during a series of confrontations involving Watchstar West and the demonic entity Brimstone. Although not formally a member of the team, he proved instrumental in dealing with threats that conventional methods could not address.

From that point on, Hex became a recurring ally of Watchstar West and its successor organization, Knight/Watch. His relationship with them is informal but reliable—he shows up when things get strange.

And they usually do.

Hex Investigations

[edit]

Operating under the name Hex Investigations, he runs a private detective agency in downtown Hollywood. His services cover the usual range—missing persons, surveillance, and investigation—but he is best known for handling cases that involve the occult, the paranormal, or things that do not fit into any ordinary category.

His rates are described as “reasonable,” though what constitutes reasonable often depends on how dangerous the case turns out to be.

True Nature

[edit]

Hex’s origins are unclear. He has alluded to a long and troubled past, one involving serious wrongdoing and a need for atonement. There are indications that he may not be entirely human, or that he has existed longer than he appears.

He does not clarify.

What is known is that he moves comfortably among demons, spirits, and other entities, treating them less as mysteries and more as acquaintances—often on a first-name basis.

Powers

[edit]

Hex is a powerful practitioner of sorcery.

  • Demonic Lore – Extensive knowledge of infernal entities and their hierarchies
  • Spellcasting – Ability to perform a wide range of magical effects
  • Summoning And Binding – Interaction with otherworldly beings
  • Arcane Awareness – Sensitivity to supernatural disturbances

His magic is practical, efficient, and rarely showy.

Skills

[edit]

Hex combines mystical ability with grounded investigative work.

  • Experienced private investigator
  • Skilled interrogator and negotiator
  • Street-level contacts across Los Angeles
  • Deep familiarity with both criminal and supernatural underworlds

He solves problems.

He just has a wider definition of what a problem is.

Equipment

[edit]

Hex makes use of both mundane and unusual tools.

  • A 1957 Thunderbird that never seems to require fuel
  • Occult implements and ritual materials
  • Standard detective gear adapted for supernatural cases

The Thunderbird, in particular, has drawn attention, though Hex offers no explanation for its peculiarities.

Associate

[edit]

Hex is rarely seen without his companion:

  • Albert the Wizard Lizard – A highly intelligent, telepathic reptile who serves as partner, advisor, and occasional conscience

Albert’s presence reinforces the idea that Hex’s world operates under rules very different from the ordinary.

Personality

[edit]

Hex is dry, pragmatic, and often sardonic. He treats even the most bizarre situations with a kind of weary familiarity, as though nothing he encounters is entirely new.

Beneath that exterior lies a sense of purpose rooted in guilt and responsibility. Whatever he did in the past, he has chosen to spend the present trying to balance it.

Reputation

[edit]

Among heroes, Hex is regarded as the person to call when a problem stops making sense. Among supernatural entities, he is known—and often avoided. His ability to navigate both worlds makes him uniquely valuable and occasionally unsettling.

[edit]

Legacy

[edit]

Hex exists at the boundary between worlds: detective and sorcerer, human and something else. His work ensures that threats from beyond do not go unchecked, even when they go unseen.

He does not claim to be a hero.

He just makes sure the worst things don’t win.
