Jersey Devil is the self-declared protector of New Jersey, a battered, relentless, and deeply questionable vigilante whose greatest asset may be his refusal to quit. Whether he is a tragic figure, a local legend, or just very hard to kill remains a matter of debate.
Background
[edit]The true origin of the Jersey Devil is unclear, and even he does not seem entirely certain. His most consistent story is that he was once a cabdriver named Joe Don Butcher who was nearly killed in a robbery. To survive, he underwent extensive surgery that replaced much of his skull with a steel plate.
If true, it explains some things.
Not all of them.
What is known is that the Jersey Devil began operating in Newark, attempting to wage war against organized crime. The results were not encouraging. After repeated injuries and escalating hospital bills, he relocated—first to Hoboken, then Hackensack—with similar outcomes.
Eventually, he found limited success in Trenton, where he managed to win a single, decisive night against local gangs before his body—and possibly his luck—gave out again.
The Long Road Of Persistence
[edit]Despite injuries, setbacks, and what most observers would consider overwhelming evidence that this is not a viable career path, the Jersey Devil continues. He has become a fixture in the tri-state area not because of success, but because of sheer persistence.
He keeps coming back.
This has led some to speculate that his true ability is not strength or skill, but endurance on a level that borders on the superhuman.
Watchstar Applications
[edit]The Jersey Devil has applied for membership in Watchstar no fewer than twenty-three times. Early applications were formally reviewed and declined. Later ones were ignored. Eventually, the organization ceased responding altogether.
He has not stopped applying.
The Good Guys
[edit]Refusing to accept rejection, the Jersey Devil partnered with Shagg to form The Good Guys, a team intended—by their estimation—to become the premier superhero group of the tri-state area.
Results have been mixed.
Powers
[edit]The Jersey Devil does not appear to possess conventional superhuman powers.

Whether these traits are natural, enhanced, or simply the result of extraordinary stubbornness remains unclear.
