“Do you know what it’s like to kill everyone you touch?”
Meltdown

Meltdown is the tragic and terrifying identity of Charles Devane, a brilliant nuclear engineer transformed into a living radioactive hazard after a catastrophic reactor accident destroyed his body and contaminated him permanently. Unable to touch another human being without exposing them to lethal radiation, Devane descended into bitterness, rage, and eventual villainy before being recruited by MEK, who provided him with the armored containment suit that made survival — and revenge — possible.

Among modern supervillains, few are more dangerous simply to stand near.

Early Life

[edit]

Charles Devane was a respected physicist and nuclear engineer whose work focused on advanced reactor systems and energy-distribution technologies. Colleagues described him as intelligent, methodical, and deeply committed to the idea that nuclear science could improve human civilization when properly controlled.

Devane lived a relatively ordinary life outside his work, devoted to his family and career.

Then the reactor failed.

The Accident

[edit]

During a catastrophic systems accident at a nuclear facility, Devane suffered massive radiation exposure while attempting to contain the disaster and prevent a wider meltdown. The incident horribly burned and disfigured him, but somehow failed to kill him outright.

Instead, the radiation altered him permanently.

Devane’s body became a constant source of deadly radioactive emissions. Though he survived physically, prolonged proximity to him became lethal to ordinary humans.

At first, Devane did not fully understand the extent of the contamination.

By the time he learned the truth, it was already too late.

Loss Of His Family

[edit]

In one of the most tragic incidents associated with any modern supervillain, Devane accidentally exposed his own family to fatal radiation poisoning through ordinary physical contact shortly after the accident.

The realization shattered him psychologically.

Wracked by guilt, grief, and uncontrollable rage, Devane withdrew increasingly from society while authorities and corporations distanced themselves from responsibility for the accident. Public fear surrounding his condition only deepened his isolation.

To Charles Devane, humanity had abandoned him the moment he became inconvenient.

That resentment eventually curdled into hatred.

Recruitment By MEK

[edit]

Devane was eventually approached by Channel, who recognized both the danger and usefulness of the irradiated scientist. Through MEK, Devane received access to advanced containment technology that allowed him to survive and operate without immediately killing everyone around him.

The resulting armored system became known as the Meltdown suit.

For the first time since the accident, Devane could interact with the world again.

Unfortunately, by then he no longer cared much about saving it.

Powers

[edit]

Meltdown’s mutated body continuously emits dangerous levels of radiation.

His powers include:

  • Constant radioactive emission
  • Projection of concentrated radiation bursts
  • Energy-channeling through his containment suit
  • Radiation resistance and survival in extreme environments
  • Potential enhancement through nuclear energy sources

At full output, Meltdown can irradiate entire areas and devastate electronic or biological systems alike.

Technology

[edit]

The Meltdown suit is both life-support system and weapon platform.

Its functions include:

  • Radiation containment and regulation
  • Nuclear-powered energy amplification
  • Projection systems for radioactive energy blasts
  • Reinforced armored protection
  • Environmental survival systems

Without the suit, Devane becomes vastly more dangerous to everyone nearby — including himself.

Skills

[edit]

Before his transformation, Charles Devane was an accomplished scientist and engineer.

  • Nuclear physics expertise
  • Reactor engineering and energy systems
  • Advanced technical problem-solving
  • Scientific analysis and systems design

Even in his unstable state, Devane remains intellectually formidable.

Personality

[edit]

Meltdown is angry, grief-stricken, volatile, and deeply isolated. Unlike conquerors or criminal opportunists, Devane’s villainy grew directly from loss and despair.

At his core remains a man who once believed technology could help humanity.

Now he views humanity as fearful, selfish, and hypocritical.

His emotional instability is worsened by constant physical suffering, isolation, and the knowledge that ordinary human contact has effectively been stolen from him forever. Relationships, affection, and even casual touch became impossible.

That loss haunts him constantly.

At times Meltdown appears monstrous.

At others he seems like a man trapped inside a living disaster.

Legacy

[edit]

Meltdown became one of the defining radioactive villains of the modern era and a recurring enemy of Watchstar West. His stories blended nuclear horror, personal tragedy, technological catastrophe, and emotional isolation into some of the darker science-fiction narratives of the Crucible Universe.

Because Charles Devane survived the reactor accident.

Unfortunately, everyone close to him did too.

For a little while.
