Metatron is a mysterious winged superhuman associated with the apocalyptic cult known as Apocalypse. Radiating blinding mystical energies and speaking in the language of divine punishment, Metatron presents himself less as a man than as an instrument of cosmic judgment.
Very little about him is truly known.
What is known is deeply disturbing.
Origins
[edit]The origins of Tanner Kersh remain almost completely undocumented prior to his appearance alongside Apocalypse. No birth records, educational history, military files, or reliable public information concerning his early life have ever been uncovered.
Even the name “Tanner Kersh” may be false.
What investigators have managed to determine suggests some form of connection between Metatron and the bizarre mutagenic entity known as Ooze. The exact nature of this relationship remains unclear. Some theories suggest Kersh was transformed through exposure to Ooze itself, while others believe both entities may originate from the same supernatural or extradimensional phenomenon.
Neither possibility is comforting.
Apocalypse
[edit]Metatron eventually emerged publicly as one of the most feared operatives of Apocalypse, a cult-like organization obsessed with collapse, purification, and catastrophic transformation.
Within the group, Metatron functions less like an ordinary member and more like a living religious symbol. Followers often speak of him in reverential terms, describing him as an angel, herald, or divine executioner sent to prepare humanity for some approaching reckoning.
Metatron himself neither confirms nor denies such claims.
He simply calls his power Judgement.
Powers
[edit]Metatron possesses a range of apparently mystical or supernatural abilities centered around radiant energy projection.
Known powers include:
- Projection of destructive mystical light
- Blinding or lethal energy bursts
- Flight through large feathered wings
- Superhuman durability
- Intense radiant-energy generation
The light generated by Metatron appears neither technological nor entirely biological in origin. Witnesses frequently describe it as strangely “alive,” with emotional and psychological effects accompanying physical injury.
Victims exposed to high levels of his energy sometimes report hearing voices, experiencing visions, or reliving traumatic memories.
The Wings
[edit]Metatron’s large feathered wings appear fully organic and functional, allowing sustained flight and remarkable aerial maneuverability. Analysis of recovered feathers has produced contradictory results, with samples displaying both ordinary biological structures and inexplicable anomalous properties.
Some occult researchers believe the wings are not truly physical at all, but manifestations of some deeper supernatural transformation.
Personality
[edit]Metatron is calm, detached, solemn, and unnervingly certain of himself. He speaks with the cadence of a preacher or prophet, often framing violence and destruction as moral necessity rather than cruelty.
Unlike sadistic villains who enjoy suffering, Metatron appears to view his actions as sacred obligations.
That conviction makes him frighteningly difficult to intimidate or reason with.
At times he behaves almost compassionately toward victims moments before harming them, as though convinced he is offering purification rather than punishment. This bizarre serenity only deepens the unsettling aura surrounding him.
Even fellow members of Apocalypse reportedly fear him.
Relationship With Ooze
[edit]Metatron’s connection to Ooze remains one of the great unanswered mysteries surrounding the character. Theories include:
- Shared mutagenic origin
- Religious or psychic bond
- Exposure to the same extradimensional force
- Direct biological transformation
Neither Metatron nor Ooze has ever publicly explained the connection.
Some investigators suspect the truth would be far worse than any current theory.
Legacy
[edit]Metatron became one of the most enigmatic supernatural villains of the modern era and a recurring adversary of Sierra Force. His combination of religious imagery, apocalyptic mysticism, cosmic ambiguity, and unsettling calm made him one of the more psychologically disturbing figures in the Crucible Universe.
Because most villains want power.
Metatron seems to want absolution.
For everyone.
Whether they want it or not.
