“You call this reality because you lack the courage to perceive anything greater.”
Morgath the Merciless

Morgath the Merciless is one of the most feared occult and extradimensional threats in the history of Earth-11717: a towering sorcerer-philosopher whose vast psychic and mystical powers have repeatedly endangered reality itself.

Though often described as a sorcerer, Morgath is something far stranger than a mortal magician.

Whatever he once was, he no longer appears entirely human.

His grotesquely enlarged cranium houses an intellect expanded beyond normal dimensional limits, while writhing tentacular appendages emerge constantly from his skull like semi-living manifestations of thought itself. The appendages move independently, reacting to unseen stimuli, coiling around magical energies, and sometimes twitching moments before Morgath speaks.

Some occult scholars insist the tentacles are not physically attached to him at all.

Rather, they are extensions of whatever vast intelligence exists beyond the visible universe.

The Forbidden Name

[edit]

Among mystics and occult scholars, Morgath’s name is rarely spoken aloud.

Most instead refer to him indirectly:

  • The Merciless One
  • The Lord Beyond
  • The Tentacled King
  • He-Who-Hears
  • The Black Oracle

Ancient grimoires warn that speaking Morgath’s true name can attract his attention across dimensional boundaries.

Whether this phenomenon represents psychic resonance, occult sympathy, or simple superstition remains uncertain.

Enough incidents have followed deliberate attempts to invoke him that even experienced sorcerers avoid unnecessary reference.

PHASE II files do not use his name at all. Instead, all official documentation refers to him only as: SUBJECT 1334

The designation appears without explanation.

Several internal PHASE directives associated with Subject 1334 reportedly include unusual restrictions involving psychic observation, mirrored surfaces, and repeated verbal reference during containment briefings.

Origin

[edit]

Virtually nothing certain is known about Morgath’s origins.

The oldest known references to him appear in fragmented pre-human tablets recovered from buried ruins beneath Mesopotamia, though descriptions vary wildly across cultures and eras.

Some texts describe him as a mortal sorcerer who breached the veil separating reality from the Outer Dark—a realm of impossible geometry and living thought existing beyond conventional spacetime.

Others claim he was never human at all, but rather an extradimensional intelligence attempting to incarnate itself within material reality.

Whatever the truth, all surviving accounts agree on one point:

Morgath was transformed by contact with something beyond mortal comprehension.

His mind expanded beyond the limitations of physical existence, granting him terrible knowledge and immense power at the cost of his humanity.

The Outer Dark

[edit]

Morgath draws much of his power from the extradimensional realm known in occult lore as the Outer Dark.

Mystics describe the Outer Dark as a place where:

  • Thought becomes matter
  • Identity dissolves
  • Time loses meaning
  • Space folds upon itself
  • Consciousness exists independent of form

Exposure to the Outer Dark is catastrophically dangerous to ordinary minds.

Telepaths attempting direct psychic contact with Morgath have suffered psychotic collapse, comas, permanent neurological trauma, or spontaneous dissociation.

Some occult researchers believe Morgath no longer fully exists within conventional reality.

Only part of him manifests physically on Earth at any given time.

Powers

[edit]

Morgath possesses immense mystical and psychic abilities operating across both physical and extradimensional planes.

His powers include:

  • Reality Manipulation – Warping physical laws and dimensional structure
  • Sorcery – Mastery of forbidden mystical disciplines
  • Psychic Domination – Overwhelming mental and emotional influence
  • Dimensional Projection – Opening portals and traversing realities
  • Energy Manipulation – Projection of destructive mystical force
  • Soul Extraction – Imprisoning or consuming consciousness
  • Time Distortion – Limited manipulation of temporal flow
  • Summoning – Calling entities from beyond known reality
  • Astral Manifestation – Existing partially outside material space

Morgath’s mere presence destabilizes nearby reality.

Witnesses have reported:

  • Clocks stopping
  • Gravity fluctuations
  • Mirrors reflecting impossible images
  • Voices speaking before mouths move
  • Shadows behaving independently
  • Sudden memory loss
  • Electronic and magical system failures

Animals panic in his vicinity.

Sensitive minds often experience migraines, hallucinations, or irrational terror.

Personality

[edit]

Morgath is calm, patient, intellectual, and profoundly alien in outlook.

He rarely displays overt rage or theatrical cruelty. Instead, he speaks with detached certainty, as though humanity were a primitive condition destined to disappear.

He views morality, individuality, and physical reality itself as temporary limitations.

To Morgath, existence is incomplete.

And he intends to perfect it.

Enemies

[edit]

Morgath has repeatedly clashed with many of Earth-11717’s greatest mystical and cosmic defenders, including:

Even powerful cosmic entities reportedly treat Morgath with caution.

The Cult Beyond Thought

[edit]

Over time, Morgath has gathered a secretive following of mystics, nihilists, scholars, and psychologically altered devotees known collectively as the Cult Beyond Thought.

Cult members believe Morgath represents the next stage of existence and seek to help him “liberate” humanity from the prison of material reality.

Prolonged exposure to Morgath’s teachings often results in severe mental or physical transformation.

Some cultists develop psychic abilities.

Others simply disappear.

Legacy

[edit]

Morgath the Merciless became one of the defining mystical supervillains of the Bronze and Modern Ages: a fusion of cosmic horror, occult philosophy, extradimensional terror, and classic comic-book grandeur.

Heroes fear him not merely because he is powerful.

But because some part of them suspects he may truly perceive realities they cannot.

And because throughout occult circles, one warning has endured for generations:

Never speak his name aloud.
