Nightmare is the corrupted identity of Bannon Ford, a psychic researcher whose experiments into human consciousness accidentally opened contact with a malevolent entity from a dream-realm beyond ordinary reality. The encounter shattered Ford’s sanity, transforming him into a powerful psionic manipulator capable of inducing overwhelming fear, terror, and emotional collapse in others.
Since then, Nightmare has become one of the most psychologically dangerous members of Apocalypse.
Because unlike many telepaths, he does not merely read minds.
He feeds on what terrifies them.
Early Career
[edit]Before his transformation, Bannon Ford was regarded as a brilliant if controversial researcher in the fields of psychic phenomena, emotional cognition, and subconscious mental structures. Obsessed with the hidden architecture of fear, dreams, and primal emotion, Ford spent years investigating altered states of consciousness and possible psionic dimensions underlying human thought.
Many colleagues considered his theories dangerously speculative.
Ford considered them timid.
Over time his experiments became increasingly reckless, involving sensory deprivation, induced psychic projection, dream-state synchronization, and attempts to establish contact with nonhuman intelligences through subconscious pathways.
Eventually, one of those experiments answered back.
Contact With The Dream Entity
[edit]During a deep psychic probing session, Ford established mental contact with an unknown entity inhabiting what he later described as a “dream reality” existing parallel to human consciousness.
The contact was catastrophic.
Rather than merely communicating, the entity forced itself into Ford’s mind, overwhelming his personality and corrupting his emotional stability. Though Ford survived physically, the experience permanently altered him psychologically and psionically.
Afterward, people around him began experiencing irrational terror, vivid hallucinations, emotional breakdowns, and waking nightmares merely from being near him.
Bannon Ford gradually ceased to exist as a stable personality.
Nightmare emerged in his place.
Apocalypse
[edit]Nightmare eventually found a place within Apocalypse, whose apocalyptic mysticism and fascination with psychological collapse aligned naturally with his transformed worldview.
Within the organization, Nightmare functions less as a conventional combatant and more as a psychic weapon capable of destabilizing entire groups emotionally. His powers make him especially effective during interrogations, terror campaigns, and operations intended to spread panic or societal breakdown.
Even fellow members of Apocalypse reportedly avoid prolonged exposure to him whenever possible.
Powers

Needless to say, this possibility alarms virtually everyone.
Personality
[edit]Nightmare is intelligent, eerie, emotionally detached, and deeply unstable. Fragments of Bannon Ford’s scientific curiosity still remain, but they have become twisted by constant exposure to fear and psychic corruption.
He speaks calmly and analytically even while inflicting psychological torment.
In many ways, Nightmare no longer views fear as a negative emotion at all. To him, terror represents revelation — the moment when civilized masks collapse and the true self becomes visible.
This philosophy makes him profoundly unsettling.
Unlike sadists who enjoy suffering openly, Nightmare often behaves more like a researcher studying emotional collapse in real time.
A researcher with absolutely no ethical boundaries.
Legacy
[edit]Nightmare became one of the most psychologically disturbing psionic villains of the modern era and a recurring adversary of heroes connected to supernatural and psychic threats, including Nexus. His stories explored fear, subconscious trauma, dream logic, psychic corruption, and the terrifying vulnerability of the human mind.
Because Bannon Ford spent his life searching for the hidden truths buried within fear.
And eventually...
something in the dark answered him back.
