Pacific Academy is an exclusive private school located in Washington State, in the shadow of Mount Rainier. Officially, it is a highly selective boarding school for gifted students with unusual educational needs. Unofficially, it is one of the few known institutions in North America whose student body is composed entirely of young superhumans.
The school is run by the enigmatic Doctor Julian Li, an educator, scientist, and metahuman theorist whose exact motives have been the subject of repeated speculation. Under Li’s direction, Pacific Academy presents itself as a safe, disciplined environment where young people with extraordinary abilities can learn to control their powers, complete their education, and prepare for adult life.
Purpose And Reputation
[edit]Pacific Academy was founded to address a problem ordinary schools are poorly equipped to handle: what happens when a teenager can bend gravity, ignite plasma, read minds, teleport through walls, grow claws, speak to machines, or accidentally crack a gymnasium floor during volleyball practice?
For many young superhumans, adolescence is dangerous. Powers often emerge suddenly, emotionally, and without instruction. A frightened student may injure others without meaning to. A gifted student may be exploited by criminals, governments, corporations, cults, or ambitious parents. A lonely student may decide that fear and admiration are easier to live with than ordinary friendship.
Pacific Academy claims to offer another path. Students receive academic instruction, psychological support, power-control training, physical conditioning, ethics education, and supervision by adults who understand the dangers of superhuman adolescence.
Its reputation is therefore mixed. Supporters regard it as a necessary sanctuary. Critics call it secretive, elitist, and potentially dangerous: a private institution gathering powerful teenagers under the authority of one brilliant and opaque headmaster.
Doctor Julian Li
[edit]Doctor Julian Li is the founder and head of Pacific Academy. Publicly, he is known as a scholar of metahuman development and an advocate for specialized education. Privately, he is regarded with considerable caution by government agencies, hero teams, and rival researchers.
Li is calm, polished, difficult to read, and almost impossible to intimidate. He speaks about the students as if they are both children in need of protection and the next stage of human responsibility. He rejects the idea that young superhumans should simply be trained as soldiers, mascots, or future members of established hero teams. At the same time, Pacific Academy’s resources, security, and secrecy suggest that Li’s ambitions reach beyond ordinary education.
Whether Doctor Li is a visionary, a manipulator, a protector, or some combination of all three remains an open question. What is certain is that he has built one of the most unusual schools in the world, and that many of his students are fiercely loyal to him.
The Campus
[edit]Pacific Academy’s campus is isolated by design. Set amid dense forests, mountain roads, restricted access routes, and carefully managed private land near Mount Rainier, the school is difficult to approach without being noticed. Its distance from major population centers helps protect civilians if a student’s powers surge out of control, while also shielding the students from press, recruiters, enemies, and curious onlookers.
The grounds include classroom buildings, dormitories, laboratories, training fields, medical facilities, staff housing, athletic spaces, an underground emergency shelter, and several structures whose official purpose is not publicly documented. From the outside, Pacific Academy resembles an expensive private boarding school with unusually good security. From within, it is closer to a controlled metahuman development center.
The surrounding environment is part of the school’s training philosophy. Forests, cliffs, rain, snow, mountain weather, and open terrain allow students to practice powers under conditions that ordinary urban schools could never permit. A flight student can learn in mountain winds. A weather-controller can train away from crowded streets. A super-strong student can break stone instead of lockers.
Student Life
[edit]Life at Pacific Academy combines the familiar routines of boarding school with the unusual realities of superhuman education. Students attend classes, complete assignments, live in dormitories, compete academically, form friendships, argue, fall in love, break rules, and worry about their futures. They also attend power-control sessions, emergency drills, ethics seminars, combat-avoidance training, and supervised field exercises.
The school’s academic standards are high. Doctor Li insists that students are not merely powers in search of costumes. They are expected to master ordinary subjects as well as their abilities. A student who can generate lightning is still expected to understand history, literature, mathematics, science, and civic responsibility.
The emotional pressures are considerable. Many students arrive after frightening power manifestations, family crises, public accidents, or recruitment attempts by dangerous organizations. Others come from wealthy or influential families eager to hide, polish, or weaponize a gifted child. Pacific Academy offers safety, but not simplicity.
Power Training
[edit]Under Li’s tutelage, students receive structured training in the control and use of their powers. The goal is not simply to make them stronger. It is to make them safer, more disciplined, and more aware of the consequences of what they can do.
Training is individualized. Energy projectors learn containment, discharge limits, and fatigue management. Telepaths are taught boundaries, consent, and shielding. Shapeshifters practice identity control and medical monitoring. Flyers train in navigation, rescue techniques, and aerial safety. Stronger students learn restraint, structural awareness, and how not to turn every problem into a broken wall.
Pacific Academy places particular emphasis on responsibility. Students are taught that power used carelessly can ruin lives even when intentions are good. The school’s motto, often quoted by staff, is that control is not repression. Control is the difference between a gift and a disaster.
Faculty And Staff
[edit]Most of Pacific Academy’s staff members are also superhumans, former heroes, retired adventurers, specialized scientists, or people with long experience in the metahuman world. This is one of the school’s greatest strengths. Students are not being taught solely by adults who fear or envy them, but by people who understand what it means to live with extraordinary abilities.
Among the best-known staff members is Oliver Lawrence, the former teen superhero once known as Blazar. His presence gives Pacific Academy a direct connection to the world of youthful heroism. As someone who lived through the pressures of being a teenage superhero, Lawrence is especially valuable to students tempted by fame, glory, rebellion, or the belief that a costume solves more problems than it creates.
Other staff members serve as power-control instructors, counselors, medics, security specialists, academic teachers, and advisors. Some are public figures. Others are deliberately anonymous, either because of past identities, dangerous enemies, or the sensitive nature of their work.
The Avant Guard
[edit]Pacific Academy is alleged to be the base of a young superhero team known as the Avant Guard. The school officially denies that it operates a costumed crimefighting team, describing such claims as “misinterpretations of supervised field training, civic-response exercises, and student emergency preparedness.”
Few observers believe this denial.
The Avant Guard is rumored to consist of selected Pacific Academy students who undertake missions under adult supervision, though the degree of supervision is widely debated. Some reports describe them as a student rescue team deployed only in emergencies. Others portray them as an active young superhero group quietly directed by Doctor Li. Still others claim the team operates independently, using the school as cover while Li allows more than he admits.
If the Avant Guard exists in the form described by rumor, it raises serious questions. Are the students being protected, trained, exploited, or prepared for a world that will inevitably demand their service? Pacific Academy’s supporters argue that supervised experience is safer than unsupervised heroics. Critics respond that sending teenagers into danger is still sending teenagers into danger, no matter how elegant the uniform.
Security And Secrecy

The campus is protected by conventional guards, surveillance systems, restricted roads, encrypted communications, metahuman detection equipment, and defensive measures tailored to specific kinds of powers. More discreet protections are rumored to exist, including psychic screening, anti-teleportation systems, and emergency containment fields.
The security is not only meant to keep students in. It is also meant to keep threats out. Young superhumans are valuable. They attract kidnappers, cults, recruiters, hostile governments, black-market scientists, supervillains, and ideological movements eager to claim the next generation before anyone else does.
The school’s secrecy has drawn criticism, but Pacific Academy’s defenders point out that publicity can be dangerous. A teenager whose powers have just emerged may not survive becoming a headline.
Relationship With The Hero Community
[edit]Pacific Academy has a complicated relationship with established superheroes. Some heroes approve of the school and occasionally advise, visit, or discreetly assist with emergencies. Others are suspicious of Doctor Li and uneasy about any private institution that trains superhuman teenagers away from public oversight.
Former teen heroes are often the most divided. Some see Pacific Academy as the kind of refuge they wish they had been given. Others worry that it formalizes something dangerous: turning adolescence into a training pipeline for masks, battles, and public expectations.
The school maintains no official affiliation with PHASE II, Watchstar, the Guardians, or other major heroic organizations, though informal relationships almost certainly exist. In the superhuman world, no institution of Pacific Academy’s importance remains entirely isolated.
Reputation
[edit]Pacific Academy is admired, feared, resented, and mythologized in nearly equal measure. To parents of young superhumans, it may look like a miracle. To its students, it may be a sanctuary, a pressure cooker, a prison, or the first place they have ever felt understood. To villains and recruiters, it is a tempting concentration of raw power. To governments, it is a question waiting to become a crisis.
The school’s existence reflects a modern truth: superhuman children are no longer rare enough to ignore, and ordinary institutions cannot always protect them. Whether Pacific Academy is the answer, or merely one powerful man’s answer, remains to be seen.
For now, beneath the shadow of Mount Rainier, Doctor Julian Li continues to teach the next generation how to live with power before the world teaches them more brutally.
