Parahumanity refers to a parallel branch of the human race, possessing genetically derived metahuman abilities. Popularly known as mutants, parahumans are born with latent genetic irregularities that may manifest extraordinary powers at puberty or during moments of severe stress or trauma. These abilities vary enormously, ranging from enhanced physical capabilities to psionics, energy manipulation, biological adaptation, or stranger phenomena that modern science still struggles to classify.

Parahumans in History

[edit]

Though public awareness of parahumans exploded during the Silver Age, evidence suggests they have existed throughout human history. And throughout history, many parahumans concealed their abilities to survive.

Ancient records from many civilizations describe individuals with inexplicable powers: prophets who could hear thoughts, warriors impossible to kill, shamans who controlled fire, or rulers believed to possess divine gifts. Modern geneticists increasingly believe many legendary figures may in fact have been early parahumans whose abilities were interpreted through the lens of religion or mythology. In some cultures they were revered as demigods or saints. In others they were feared as witches, demons, or monsters.

The 20th Century

[edit]

By the middle of the 20th Century, however, the number of active parahumans began to rise dramatically. Scientists proposed numerous explanations for the increase. Some blamed radiation from atomic testing. Others pointed toward industrial pollution, experimental chemicals, cosmic radiation, or shifts in the Earth's magnetic and quantum environment. A minority of researchers argued that humanity had always carried the dormant genetic potential for mutation, and that modern conditions had merely accelerated an inevitable evolutionary process.

Parahuman Science

[edit]

The discovery of the so-called Paragene transformed genetics forever. Though still poorly understood, the Paragene appears to function as a dormant sequence within human DNA capable of triggering radical biological adaptations. The exact mechanism behind activation remains one of the great unanswered scientific questions of the modern age. Some mutations appear hereditary, while others emerge spontaneously with no known family history.

Scientific understanding of parahumanity remains fragmented and politically charged.

Organizations such as the Nova Institute have attempted to study parahumans responsibly, treating mutation as a legitimate evolutionary development. Other groups have sought to weaponize mutant abilities through experimentation, forced recruitment, or genetic engineering. Governments across the world remain divided on how parahumans should be regulated, monitored, or integrated into society.

Public Prejudice

[edit]

Public reaction has often been shaped more by fear than science.

Bigotry against parahumans remains widespread even in the modern era. Anti-mutant political movements, hate groups, and conspiracy theories continue to flourish, especially after major superhuman incidents involving mutant terrorists or rogue metahumans. Many ordinary humans fear replacement, domination, or extinction at the hands of a more powerful species. Some religious groups denounce parahumans as unnatural, while others proclaim them humanity’s destined successors.

An Uncertain Future

[edit]

Parahumans themselves are equally divided about their future.

Many have dedicated themselves to protecting humanity despite persecution and mistrust. Heroes such as Surge, Quantum, and Falcon became internationally recognized defenders of peace and coexistence. Others rejected integration entirely. The militant organization Factor M embraces the belief that parahumans are inherently superior to ordinary humans and has repeatedly used terrorism and violence to advance its agenda.

The debate surrounding parahumanity has become one of the defining social and political struggles of the modern age. To some, mutants represent hope for humanity’s future evolution. To others, they represent the collapse of the human race as it has always existed.

No one yet knows which side is correct.
