Professor Proteus was the criminal identity of Rufus Crenshaw, one of the greatest scientific minds of the Golden Age and among the earliest true “super-scientists” to challenge the heroes of the modern age. A brilliant inventor decades ahead of contemporary technology, Proteus waged war against a society he believed had rejected and ridiculed his genius, employing bizarre inventions, electrical super-weapons, and impossible machines in repeated schemes against governments and industry.
Though frequently theatrical, Proteus was no harmless eccentric.
Many historians consider him one of the first villains to demonstrate just how dangerous unchecked scientific genius could become.
Early Life
[edit]Little is known about Rufus Crenshaw’s early years, though records suggest he demonstrated extraordinary technical aptitude from an unusually young age. Long before the modern age of advanced electronics and super-technology, Crenshaw was already theorizing devices and systems that contemporary scientists considered impossible.
Unfortunately, brilliance did not bring him acceptance.
Crenshaw’s abrasive personality, arrogance, and obsession with experimental science alienated academic institutions, industrial sponsors, and government agencies alike. Projects were rejected. Funding disappeared. Rivals mocked his increasingly grandiose claims.
Over time, resentment consumed him.
Crenshaw concluded that the world did not deserve the inventions it had refused to recognize.
Rise Of Professor Proteus
[edit]Adopting the name Professor Proteus, Crenshaw began constructing elaborate hidden laboratories filled with experimental technologies years — sometimes generations — beyond the state of the art.
His inventions included:
- Directed-energy weapons
- Flying machines
- Experimental power generators
- Electrical-control systems
- Advanced robotics and automation
- Massive industrial sabotage devices
Proteus repeatedly attempted to leverage his inventions into wealth, domination, or revenge against the institutions that had rejected him.
One of his most infamous schemes involved an attempt to seize control of the world’s electrical infrastructure itself, threatening catastrophic blackouts and technological collapse unless governments submitted to his demands.
This brought him into repeated conflict with the Victory Squadron.
The Plunderers
[edit]During portions of his criminal career, Professor Proteus also became associated with the Plunderers, contributing advanced technology and engineering expertise to the organization.
Unlike the more physically oriented members of the group, Proteus represented its intellectual and technological backbone.
Even other criminals found many of his inventions unsettlingly advanced.
Technology
[edit]Professor Proteus possessed an almost supernatural intuition regarding machinery and engineering. Though working within the limitations of 1940s-era components and materials, he consistently produced technologies that should not have existed at the time.
His devices became visually iconic for their dense, industrial aesthetic:
- Vacuum tubes glowing with strange energies
- Massive control panels covered in switches and dials
- Towering generators humming with unstable electricity
- Experimental flying craft and ray cannons
- Elaborate laboratory complexes packed with analog instrumentation
Modern engineers studying recovered Proteus technology often remark that many of his concepts anticipated scientific breakthroughs decades ahead of schedule.
Some still do not fully understand how certain devices functioned.

Proteus also displayed a flair for dramatic presentation common among early supervillains. He enjoyed elaborate speeches, intimidating laboratories, and theatrical demonstrations of technological superiority.
At times he seemed less interested in defeating his enemies than proving he was smarter than them.
Which, unfortunately, he often was.
Apparent Death
[edit]Professor Proteus apparently died during an explosion triggered amid one of his later criminal operations. The blast destroyed much of his laboratory complex and no confirmed remains were recovered.
Given the history of super-scientists in the Crucible Universe, however, many historians and heroes remain skeptical regarding the permanence of his death.
Especially since rumors occasionally surface of “Proteus devices” appearing decades after his disappearance.
Legacy
[edit]Professor Proteus became one of the defining mad scientists of the Golden Age and a recurring enemy of the Victory Squadron. His stories helped establish the Crucible Universe tradition of “super-science villains” whose intellect alone could threaten nations and heroes alike.
Many later inventors — heroic and villainous alike — owe at least indirect inspiration to Crenshaw’s breakthroughs.
Though few would admit it publicly.
Because Rufus Crenshaw believed the world feared genius.
And after seeing what he built...
it is difficult to say he was entirely wrong.
